4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2012 NEW

Family holiday in Thailand.
Stayed here while in Bangkok.
Great place, peaceful & full of character & charm to escape from crazy BBK.
Right in middle of Chinatown, which is great for food in the evening.
Pretty good access to river taxis, train station, MRT, etc.
Traffic can be pretty chaotic though, so take that into account when planning trips

Shanghai Mansion is an awesome hotel stay if you're looking for a calm and relaxing night of rest after a hectic day of shopping.

The front desk service was fast and efficient. Very polite and courteous too. The whole check in and check out process will not take more than 5mins.

Also, standard of room service is closed to perfection. With mini fridge refilled with snacks and beer everyday. The bed was very comfy and huge!

Hotel breakfast buffet was good. And it is interesting to note that the crowd there consists of polite and friendly people. No noisy crying babies and rude asians barging into your queue to spoil your day.

All in all i had a fantastic time at Shanghai Mansion. Would definitely be back!

It is the sixth or seventh time there, I always like very, very much. This time they gave me an upgrade of room and I stayed in the only type of room I didn´t stay before. It is always well decorated, good taste. The breakfast is very good and they have good restaurant too. And Chinatown of Bangkok is always nice.

This hotel is excellent value for what you get. Everything in the mini bar is free (no alcohol), and the buffet brekkie is delish. Great location for Chinatown, however a little out of the way for the other areas of Bangkok. It's about 15-20 mins walk to the main train station, and a metro station. Service is great, the staff are always willing to help and provide great advice on where to go.

Welcome to my kinda decor
Wow, this place warrants all the extraordinary reviews on the web.
All the basics of a decent hotel, wrapped in Chinese candy floss and glitz
(perhaps a pool or a gym would be nice, but who needs when you have the lanes of chinatown to explore)

This place has that something, a visual feast, each room, stands out as a visual feast.

Its worth trying to get one of the rooms on the outer walls of the 4th and 5th floor as they at least have some natural light, but even the windowless inner rooms are worth a stay. Pay the extra, the suites are awesome !

The hotel is highly overpriced if you book directly, with massive discounts on Agoda and Asiarooms.

Took me 3 days before I discovered the supermarket in the basement and the grand ball room in the roof.

Buffet breakfast is good and extends till late, room service is a mix of in house and bought in, very chinesem but then what do you expect in china town. Out the front door and turn right, to the next intersection for a food fest, round the corner and on your left for awesome massage. If your heading back into town walk around to the block behind the hotel as your starting point

This might be one of the most effortlessly stylish, comfortable, and unique hotels, I've ever graced. Drawn by the colors, the lanterns, the classic Chinese poster beds(!) from the site pictures (and lest I forget the bird cages in the large bathroom), I was even more delighted by the actual property which while not as pristine as expected, has a slight Bangkok edge which only adds to the experience. Said differently, this is the type of property a large hotel chain may attempt to commercialize, but will never get quite right. This is evident in the style, the space, the detail, and quite beautifully, the service!

If you havent stayed in china town before, expect busy streets and roads with a lot of smells. Most of them unpleasant. But the hotel is a different world compared to the mayhem of china town. Defo reccomend.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2012

I can't speak highly enough about the Shanghai Mansions in terms of the balance between comfort, style, quiet, location and value in a city with a dizzying array of sleeping options.

First off, this was my fourth stay at the Mansions which are located amazingly and conveniently smack in the middle of Chinatown with a fabulous range of eateries and street food for just walking out the door. Additionally, the location is just close enough to walk to the major tourist attractions while being far enough away to be off the tired tourist track.

The hotel is also just amazingly lovely. Decorated to an incredibly high standard in the style of 1930s Shanghai the design touches and little details in rooms and around the hotel are obviously put there by people with an amazing attention to making your stay awesome. I love the style of the hotel and am in awe of the little things from free minibar to comfy bathrobes that make stays there a real treat.

Above all though, in busy bustling and noisy Bangkok, I have never slept better. The hotel is quiet at night, which is amazing considering how much bustle there is the second you step outside its doors.

I also love the fact the wifi is open, making the internet useful, quick and handy if you're travelling on business.

As for food options, the breakfast is good and plentiful and there is a great free spread included in your room rate, but i think the cooked options could be kicked up a notch. They emulate English and such breakfasts fine but seem more thai imitations than the real things (they are yummy though). The pancakes looked particularly good. But I still think, since most people do eat breakie in the hotel, focusing on breakfast options would make this place unbelievable.

One thing that is amazing is their latest cocktail menu. I highly recommend the "Oriental Gold" cocktail to replenish yourself after a day tramping around the wats and tuk-tuking back from JJ market.

And finally, the staff are lovely and welcoming and go out of their way to make sure you're taken care of... and that's from the restaurant staff to reception to the cleaners.

Seriously, if you're looking for a reasonably priced but excellent place to stay in BKK, this is the one you want to book.

Earlier this year, we stayed at this hotel and it was absolutely flawless. The welcome drink was delicious and our room was perfect. I didn't even notice that there was no window until the 3rd day. The character is the most alluring aspect of this hotel. The location is great, tuk tuks can get you where you need to go very easily and the customer service is just so lovely.

The shower was wonderful and the bath massive. The bed super comfortable and as one of our nights was a saturday night, we had a live musician playing by the pond. The perfect romantic and idillic start to our stay in Thailand.

"This hotel gets better and better"

This was my second stay at the Shanghai Mansion. The hotel has been completed... it was still under construction the first time. It is really pretty. The breakfast is much better and the new restaurant is a pleasant space. The staff is still really friendly and speaks good English. There is now live entertainment in the hotel. There was a Nat King Cole cover band in the bar at night. They were really fun to hear.... for free. The hotel is in the beginning of Chinatown which is a little inconvenient because traffic there is terrible. It is within a 10 minute walk of the river taxi and the Metro. I really don't mind the fact that it is where it is. Chinatown is a destination in itself with many restaurants and a vibrant market. I really reccomend this hotel. It just gets better and better.

Stayed with my wife 5 days in this hotel, enjoyed the experience greatly. Hotel room large and a mixture of traditional and contemporary . During our stay my wife had her birthay which the staff sang happy birthday and brought a cake with candles , delightful touch. Hotel just yards away from markets etc. Room a bit dark due to window facing another building in lane. Enjoyed the jazz band during evening meal upstairs

Chill out at the Cotton Club from 8.30pm with live music.Limited Western menu could be a problem.Great place to drink though. The girl singer on weekends is a real talent.Try eatng great seafood in the many restaurants or party with 100's at the nightly street stalls. The Tops Supermarket at ground level is so handy and the ATM's there are away from the crowds.

Greeting with cool towels and a complimentary jasmine tea is the perfect way to arrive into the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. The retro Shanghai style decor looks fresh and the hotel is full of gorgeous little quirky touches, I loved the little faux bird cage in the shower. The rooms are not enormous, but are still generous compared with European standards. The concierge was helpful giving us taxi tips and helping us with changing our newly purchased Thai phone to English so we could use it. The live musician playing over the pond in the centre of the hotel added perfectly to the air of calm admist the madness of busy Bangkok.

This wonderful hotel sits slap bang in the middle of Chinatown, which holds all the buzz of the crazy Bangkok day and evening life. The hotel itself has some fabulous designs based on Shanghai and is a haven of peace and quiet from the noisy street outside. Basic but fabulously arty rooms, its a far cry from the boring box like hotels that can dot around Bangkok. Loads of character and a great spot to stay to explore Bangkok. amazing seafood stall just down the street that just buzzes with energy and life. Take the chaos on the chin and absorb the sheer magic of a vibrant part of Bangkok.
Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back away from the main street. We stayed at the back and didnt really hear a thing. You wont get views at this place but who needs them when youre a quick stroll from the river bus.

Beautiful fitted out hotel , truly in Shanghai 1920's style. Right in the heart of chinatown amongst great Chinese/Seafood restaurants.

The hotel interior is beautiful.
Stayed during the Bangkok Flooding (very close to the river) and the staff were very helpful.
The breakfast was also a real treat , not just standard hotel breakfast , it was a real tasty feast with western , thai and chinese foods.
Very highly recommended!

Guest Review a true value property...

in the heart of classic chinatown...
i've stayed at this property several times over the last three years, and each time has been very worthwhile. while this is not a 'luxury' property in that sense of the word, it is clean, well-maintained, and the decor is magnificent. this will make your chinatown experience complete...it would very much remind you of being in 1930's classic shanghai. rates are reasonable here...and a room can be booked with, or without breakfast. the breakfast is a good one...with your choice of asian treats served on a buffet, salads, fruits, and/or a western breakfast...or both!! just don't eat so much that you don't have room to enjoy the many fine restaurants in the area. actually, shanghai mansion has so many things going for it...there are too many to list. hospitality is supurb, it's right in the heart of all the hustle and bustle of chinatown, and there's even a small supermarket in the basement. two years ago, we stayed here during chinese new year... that is an experience not to be missed!!!

Guest Review “Exotic, comfortable, gorgeous rooms”
We found Bangkok to be an intimidating city, but the Shanghai Mansion is reason enough to return. My 28 year old daughter and her friend accompanied us and we were all rapturous over the comfort and decor of our rooms - striking colors, red lacquered woodwork, hanging lanterns, spacious bathroom. I have never been to China, but the Mansion gave us an intoxicating taste. Despite some initial reserve, the staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. We would most definitely stay there again.

Guest Review “Oasis in Crazy Town”
We did some research before booking a hotel in Bangkok and came across this place which has won Boutique Hotel Asia in the past. Chinatown is incredibly chaotic and wonderful and stepping into this gorgeous calming hotel was like diving into the sea on a hot day. Access is unusual in that you go up to reception via an escalator at the bottom of which are the names of all the new guests that day. Upstairs is dark wood, red lanterns and plush airy comfort. The bar/ restaurant is great for drinks (food ok) and they have live music most nights (think Chinese tribute bands). The rooms are really nice (as if Hotel du Vin had gone Asian) and the beds very comfy. We stayed again on our way back through the capital and we are booked in again twice this winter. If you want the most amazing street food, turn right outside the hotel and on more or less the next street corner it gets transformed into a hive of buzzy street restaurants. That was my first experience of Thai food and I have to say it has rarely been bettered.

Guest Review “A calm oasis in frenetic Bangkok”
Because I live in Chiang Mai, I am in Bangkok fairly often. Unless I have a very early flight out, Shanghai Mansion is my first choice of places to stay in Bangkok. This review is based on my most recent stay.

The transition from the bustle of Yawaraj Road up the escalator to the quiet calm of the reception area is truly amazing. The noise and heat below fade into a quiet oasis with only soft music (usually jazz) playing in the background. From the minute you arrive, the staff does its best to take excellent care of you. You are met with a traditional Thai bow, a smile, a cold towel to refresh yourself with, and a welcoming drink. My favorite is the infused lemongrass. Check-in is quick and efficient.

As you can see in the attached images, the reception area is well appointed with real leather couches, comfortable chairs, and a circular iron staircase that goes to the restaurant on the 3rd floor. Behind the staircase is a comfortable sitting area where you can look out over Yawaraj Road or surf the net. Free wifi is available throughout the hotel and in the rooms.

As the bellman takes you to your room, you can see the beautiful atrium with its fish pond and hanging lanterns. (As a note, while tipping in Thailand is not always expected - except in very touristy areas - it is appreciated. I typically tip about 30 Thai baht (approx. $1.00 US) per bag)

The rooms themselves are well appointed. The images I have attached are from the room I stayed in and what the hotel refers to as its standard room. Other than cleanliness, of course, there are three things I look for in a hotel room: comfortable beds, hot showers, and big towels. Shanghai Mansion meets all those requirements. Having traveled through a number of Asian countries, I have noted that beds, even at higher end hotels, tend to be harder (as opposed to just firmer) than those that most Americans might be used to. That has not been the case here. While the beds have been on the firm side, they have still been very comfortable. The walk-in showers have large shower heads which, along with plenty of hot water and excellent water pressure, gives you a truly relaxing shower after a hard day of work or sightseeing. Just as a note, if you prefer a tub, they do have them in some of the rooms. The tub image I have attached is from one of the rooms I stayed in on a previous trip. Finally, the towels. Towels in Asia tend to be relatively small and thin compared to what most people would have at home and barely get you completely dry. That is not the case with Shanghai Mansion. They provide you with large, thick, comfortable towels.

Breakfast in the hotel restaurant has a good selection of well prepared items. It is a buffet that has both western and Asian items. I haven't had the western items mainly because I prefer Thai food. I have had dinner in the restaurant a couple of times during my visits and found the food to be well pre parted and tasty.

On the first floor of the building down the escalator and to the left, there is a small Tops Supermarket and a small pastry shop.

So, would I stay here again? I'm already booked for the end of November.

As a p.s., I noted in a few of the prior reviews, some comments about the location of the hotel. It is in Chinatown. While not in the heart of Bangkok's more touristy areas, it is not a problem. Unlike many large capital cities, Bangkok has an efficient, reasonably priced taxi fleet. Make sure you only do metered taxis and that the driver uses the meter. As a price example, from Suvarnabhumi airport to the hotel, the price usually runs about 500 baht (approx. $16.00 US). That price includes the actual fare, the 50 baht airport concession fee, the toll road fees of approx. 70 baht, and a modest tip. Some drivers pay the toll and collect from you at the end of the ride and some require that you provide the toll as you go. I recommend you print out the map from the hotel's webpage to show to the driver. It has information in Thai that will assist him in finding the hotel, though most drivers seem to know where it is located. Within the city, the taxi prices are inexpensive. To go from Shanghai Mansion to the Grand Palace at rush hour, for instance, was about 100 baht (approx. $3.00 US).

If you want to take other public transportation, the entrance to the Bangkok subway system is only about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Once on the subway, you can connect to the BTS Skytrain which covers much of Bangkok. A short walk through the neighborhood will also take you to the Marine Pier where you can catch the various river taxis on the Chao Phraya River (my favorite way to travel in Bangkok).

Guest Review “Beautiful hotel in busy Chinatown”
When we pulled up to the hotel in the middle of a very busy street in Chinatown, I did think what have we done. But once you got up the stairs to the actually hotel, I fell in love with the place.
The hotel is decorated beautiful in classic chinese style. My only issue but not really a complaint is that there were no windows in our bedroom. Ive noticed from the rest of my stay that low lighting is a feature of hotels in thailand. Lovely atmosphere, rubbish for putting on your make up.
The hotel has a free tuk tuk service to the Grand Palace and the local, shopping centre.
The staff were very polite and helpful when we requested any help.
Breakfast is served in the Cotton Bar which is also a restaurant and cocktail bar in the evening, that I would recommend. You could purchase full english breakfast or pancake style breakfast but I was perfectly happy with the included breakfast. This was toast, pastries, cereal, fruit and a vareity of local dishes.
Chinatown is very busy and a bit of a culture shock, but I am so glad we experienced it. I would say that you have to get a taxi most places but these were very cheap compared to england. We ate out twice on the street of the hotel. The food was chinese theme obviously but was great and good value for money.

Guest Review “Brilliant hotel in a crazy part of Bangkok!”

Three words; brilliant, brilliant and brilliant.
Clean, quirky, friendly staff, original and interesting decor and designs, it's also an oasis from the unrestrained madness which is Chinatown outside the front door! Our visit coincided with an annual vegetarian festival, held in late September to early October. This means that Chinatown from 6pm to at least midnight (I was too exhausted to see how late it went on) was complete chaos, but I mean this in a positive way. The pavements were packed with street vendors selling any manner of vegetarian delights and every side street and alleyway, seemed just as bustling. The food we ate on the street was amazing. Unfortunately we didn't eat in the hotel, due to the wealth of choice outside on the doorstep, although the bar was a cool, relaxing place to retreat when it all got a bit much on the street!

Would definately stay here again the next time I'm in Bangkok

Stayed at this hotel in August 2011 for 2 nts. When we first arrived we were worried about the location. So busy and congested but on entering the shanghai mansion it's a different world to the outside. First we were meet by the bell boy (cant remember his name but so friendly) who took our bags and took us to the reception. We were shown to our room which was lovely, after passing the wonderful 1930's decor and amazing fish pond within the hotel lobby. We then stayed for two more nts after going to Phuket for 10nts and on our return received the same brilliant service as before and on returning were told we had been upgraded to a more senior room. Which was music to my ears. The room was amazing with a bed which u could sleep 6 people in. Anyway I highly recommend this hotel for service, cleanliness, basically it's great.

If you want to explore Bangkok's Chinatown, then you can't do much better than this hotel. Outside it's typically chaotic and traffic-clogged... inside it's as though you've been transported onto a different planet! Calm, spacious & stylish. Coloured lanterns, huge orchid displays and a goldfish pond the size of a small swimming pool. We stayed in a suite - a gorgeous retreat, complete with giant bed and equally giant bath.
Staff were friendly and courteous; umbrellas were provided (just as well!) together with maps suggesting a walking route and a foodie route around the area. We didn't take advantage of the free tuktuks to MBK and other sites, as we simply wanted to wander around the local area for the weekend.
Room Tip: Treat yourself to a suite here!

location
My best stay in the luxury boutiques hotel in the heart of China Town in Bangkok area. Shopping mall and food located within very close area of the hotel or for the more adventurous go for a night food safari along the busy street in the night. Savour a meal at many chinese restaurants and bars, spoil yourself with your love one with champagne brunch at any bar corner, or enjoy a revitalizing organic juice alone the street of China Town area.

Guest Review “Awesome, awesome, awesome.”
Between the crowded alleys and street markets of Chinatown you’ll find Shanghai Mansion, a little gem of a hotel. We had just landed after an 11-hour flight and they greeted us with a smile and the traditional refreshing towels. The room was very nicely decorated in traditional Chinese style and the bed was absolutely huge. In the room there is a minibar with a couple drinks and snacks which are free of charge. My only complaint is that the room had no windows at all, so we would wake up in the morning and think it was still night outside.
Breakfast was exceptional. A large buffet with western, Chinese and Thai food, plus you can choose one of three “main dishes”.
The hotel is in the heart of Chinatown. A taxi to most places in the western part of Bangkok will probably cost around 60-80 baht, just make sure you don’t try to take taxi during heavy traffic (in fact, many taxi drivers will refuse to go to Chinatown during rush hour). It’s a 15-minute walk from the hotel to Hua Lamphong train station, from which you can take a train to pretty much anywhere in Thailand (or a subway to the eastern half of Bangkok).
Except for the window thing, there’s not a bad thing I can say about the hotel. I highly recommend it.
If you want a good sweet snack, go left from the entrance and you’ll see a guy selling Chinese donuts with awesome green coconut cream.

we really enjoy our stay in shanghai mansion even we just stayed there for a day. the room is well decorated and unique in its own way. although it might not be the best location for shopping, but if you were to visit wat pho (reclining buddha) and the grand palace which is 10mins away from the hotel, you might want to try this hotel out.

Guest Review “What you want when in the heart of Chinatown”
When you're looking fr a 1-2 night emersion into Chinatown, don't you wnt a hotel that captures the ambiance? Built in the late 1800s, but decorated with the 1930s Shanghai flavor, the hotel in centrally located in the heart of Chinatown and is what I had hoped t would be.
I have been to Bangkok a few times, always try to stay in new neighborhood to get out to walk and explore. If you want to explore Chinatown, ideal hotel.

Guest Review “Honeymoon Paradise for a real china town expeience”

We stayed at this hotel for 5 days after arriving in Bangkok and 3 days after we got back from Phuket. There was lots to see and the hotel provided the most amazing seclusion for a couple on their honeymoon. The suites on the main floor have the most amazing showers and a bathtub big enough for 2. Breakfast had the most amazing food, the dim sum was to die for. My husband had the english breakfast and said it was out of this world. The hotel is so friendly and helpful when it came to going anywhere. If you love seafood there is lots of options. Everyday they replenish the mini bar free of charge, it was delightful to have cold bottles of water, pop, chips and oreos waiting. There is a bank across the street for money exchange, 7-11 just down the street for those late night runs and across the street the most helpful pharmacy if you get some nasty insect bites. The hotel will scoop out one of the fishes from the pond and put it in your room is you want some extra company too. Truely a boutique hotel that feels like a resort minus the pool.

Guest Review “Calm oasis in Chinatown”
We had a wonderful time in Shanghai Mansion. We stayed one week. The room was lovely and very stylish, but you should get one with a window. It is great to be in Chinatown where you can have dinner on the street just around the corner of the hotel. Good and cheap, and with our small kids a perfect location. We had the benefit of a special internet rate and paid far less than the regular price for the hotel. In the Hotel Bar you can have you bedtime drink with live jazz music and the girls serving were really nice with our kids. We first wanted to stay near the river because of better air but did not regret our choice to stay in Shanghai mansion, because Chinatown is the most interesting and exotic area of Bangkok.

Guest Review "What a place!"
Stayed for 5 nights and booked it on location and price. We weren't expecting the Hylton but got a nice surprise. The hotel is located right in the middle of Chinatown and you reach the reception via an escalator right off the street. The whole place is decorated in classic Chinois style and is very plush. our room had no window which suited us as it was dark as soon as you switched off the lights and there was no traffic noise. You get a free minibar in the room (but no alchohol) and the twin beds are very comfy. Small touches make this a very enjoyable stay such as the offer of a fish tank in your room!
It is extremely well equipped with dressing gowns, slippers etc etc.
The breakfast buffet has a vast choice of foods and you can have al a carte if you prefer. At nights they have a jazz lounge open and although we never tried the dinner menu we were told it was fine.
When you step out the door you only have to turn right, and walk about two minutes to find some of the best chinese food available.Sitting on the pavement with brilliant food and drink was amazing!
They have a couple of resident Tuk Tuk drivers outside whos never ripped us off and were extremely helpful.
We paid about £40 per night per room for this hotel.

when we saw the pictures of this boutique hotel, we were in doubt: this could be great or could be over the top kitsch. fortunately, it really was great. the rooms are big and nice decorated and the staff is very friendly. for us this was a perfect price-quality proportion and the hotel gave comfort and silence needed after a day strolling true chinatown.

Guest Review We loved the location and comfort of this hotel. We thought breakfast was very good. You can order a la carte as well as eat from the buffet with many western and eastern choices. They have high tea in the afternoon, and free mocktailparties sometimes for which we found an invitations one afternoon when we returned to our room. We didn't have time to attend but thought it was a really nice idea. Downstairs there also is a little outside restaurant owned by the hotel which serves braised duck over rice etc. for 50 Baht, and icecold water for free...
The decor is oldfashioned Shanghai-Chinese, the corridors are paved with shiny concrete, as are the floors of the rooms. Very funky and stylish, but maybe not to everyones taste. The free minibar contained one pepsi, one icetea, two bottles of water, two packs of oreos and two packs of crisps or nuts, which were different every day.
And outside is the sizzzzling world of Chinatown, nicely busy during the day and really crowded at night. We had a great time, even with our five children in tow!!
For western needs there is aTops supermarket downstairs, and within five walkingminutes you will find three 7/11's, watsons, tesco, kfc and more. Highly recommended.

Guest Review A piece of old China in Bangkok
This is really an oasis of calm and beauty in the heart of bangkok. The style of the hotel and the rooms is colonial china circa 1920, so if that's not your cup of tea you may want to go elsewhere, but if it is you will feel at home and subtly moved to another time. There is a good bar restaurant with jazz at night, and in the splendid main lobby there was a koto player in the afternoon, really charming.
The rooms are classy with a hint of modern design for the bathroom and really, really comfortable.
As for the location it is in Chinatown, for me it is perfect as I love this place and you are close to subway and main train station.
Finally I will add that it is a very good value for money, for the same price you will find hotels but not with as many charm as this one.

If you like china town you will love this hotel smack bang at the start of the night life with markets, street food and a lot more right at your door step. One thing make sure you upgrade to a suite.. it wont cost you much more but it will be worth it. great in house entertainment as far as live music. The owner goes out of her way to make you feel welcome. all in all for the money you cant beat it plus there are a few good sites within walking distance once you get to know your way around and feel game enough. Hint take the tourist river ferry, there is a dock only 13 min away by foot.

Guest Review Shanghai Mansion is a treat to a photographers eye and to stay there makes you forget to be in Bangkok. It is the lovely island you can return to after an exhausting day among millions of people. The rooms are furnished in a most artistic colorful way. The location is in a busy street in China town but you will enjoy the calm of a village as soon as you enter the hotel. Hungry? Just take some steps and you will have the choice between numerous good street stalls and many restaurants including a great seafood place. We stayed in a normal bedroom for one night and in a suite for two nights and especially enjoyed the latter. It was brighter and the fact that real windows were missing didn't bother there. The suite was the nicest hotel room I ever stayed in. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Guest Review "Sanctuary in the heart of Chinatown"
Needed to stay in the old city to be close to my daily classes at Wat Po. Chinatown was in close proximity and the Shanghai Mansion was the perfect oasis of calm and luxury stylings right in the pulsing heart of the busiest part of Bangkok. Excellent street food, markets, and resturants all around. The staff at the hotel were warm and welcoming and the room was perfectly appointed. It was wonderful to come back to the room and take a relaxing soak in my wonderful private bath. The beds were so comfortable and the entire hotel looked and smelled beautiful everyday. I even brought some Hollanders I met over to check it out and they were looking forward to staying at the Shanghai Mansion on thier next visit to Bangkok. Nice Noble Value as well. You must do a bike trip with co van kessel down the road. You really get to see Chinatown and a good part of Bangkok. I suggest the all day tour. Also, T & K seafood is amazing street food every night. 517 Massage and Foot Reflexology do great treatments.

“Amazing boutique hotel!”
We stayed for one night at the Shanghai Mansion and wished that we could have stayed longer. This hotel is truly unique and the decore is absolutely amazing. Our room was the Mu Dan (Peony) Classic - it was huge and had a giant bath tub! The hotel is right in the heart of Chinatown and they provide you with a walking tour map of different street vendors so you can check out all the incredible food! AND it is only like 2 blocks away from the shopping market. The website pictures of the rooms are right on. The decore is really unique and cool.

The room also comes with a breakfast which is either made to order or buffet and the food was spectacular (can you say ... dim sum? Yum!!) Finally, although you are in Chinatown you are really close to many of the major sites in Bangkok. The doorman will help you arrange a tuk tuk and you can check out the reclining buddha, emerald buddha and grand palace all within a 10 minute ride! (Although make sure you bring a card with the hotel address with you on the tuk tuk as our driver had no clue what we were talking about until we showed him this). Without a doubt you will enjoy a stay here!

While this hotel might lack some of the facilities of higher * hotels (ie, no pool, if that matters to you), it is one of the nicest boutique hotels I've ever stayed in. The decor and ambience is simply superb, with lovely room, and fantastic service, good food and a wonderful Jazz club. The hotel is set conveniently in downtown Chinatown and only a few minutes walk from the nearest subway and main train station. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others, (and please do try the Jazz club - the house band are amazing). The restaurant quality is fantastic and very reasonably priced too. We loved our stay.

Budget, the pictures represent the real thing, hotel rooms are superb, excellent service
after reading all the reviews on agoda, decided to give it a try on shanghai mansion, to my surprise, the rooms look 100% the same as it is in the picture. nice decor, huge room, super clean, no weird smell nothing. the buffet was simple and nice, hotel staff are very friendly, the only one thing is, you need to be fine with the location china town, as transport might be alittle bit of problem if you want super convenient location. you needa be out of the hotel early morning to avoide the jam and come back at late night after your shoppings. everything in the mini bar is literally free, the room was clean and set up after i am back from my shopping and they refill the mini bar again.. i really cant ask for more for paying such a price, its really a steal yet the potray such excellent service and quality which perhaps 5 star hotel cant met, who ever is the management, you get my respect!

This hotel is not to be missed! Amazing decor, fabulous staff, water garden in the centre of the hotel and ambiance galore. This hotel was a highlight of our trip to Bangkok. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the complimentary breakfast was superb, the WiFi is free, and the room are delightful. In the middle of Chinatown, so walk out the front door and you are right in the thick of it. Some of the best shopping with the wholesale markets for optical, jewellery and just about everything else just a block or two away. Walking distance to the Indian market for the best chinese silk for 90 baht a metre!
Room Tip: 4th floor was really quiet

Guest Review “Beautifull”
Beautiful Hotel. Only the top rooms have real windows. All other rooms have a tainted glass window that doesn't open. There's not a pretty view form the window and it's actually to hot to leave the door open so if you're not a bit claustrophobic there's nothing wrong with getting just a tainted glass.
The hotel provides a free tuk tuk that takes you to the Palace at 10:30 a.m.but you need to book with 3h in advance. The same tuk tuk will also take you to a big shopping mall (MBK) three times a day.
The room was clean and beautiful, the staff was helpful and kind, the mini bar is complementary and includes cookies and drinks.
Wasn't very found of the breakfast as it isn't a full buffet. You can choose from 3 different suggestions: sweet pancakes; eggs (omelets, scrambled) or muesli. To any of these options you can add toast, juice, yogurts, etc.
Well located in Chinatown with a good selection of restaurants and Temples nearby.
I Highly recomend it.
Room Tip: Specifically ask for the Suites for a window

Guest Review “Serenity in Bangkok - beautiful”
An oasis in Bangkok. Perfectly located in downtown Chinatown, the Shanghai Mansion is just a few minutes from the main train station and subway stop, yet in the heart of one of the funnest areas to visit in Bangkok.
The interior is wonderful - beautfully designed and furnished, the rooms are spacious and lovely. Free wifi which is great!
Restaurant is fantastic! Good breakfast, but comes into its own when you have an a la carte meal - highly recommended. Jazz club in Cotton is great - make sure you go there, and have a drink while the House Band are playing. They are superb.
Couldn't fault this hotel (just watch out for the Tuk Tuk touts outside! - take a metered taxi instead, which will be cheaper, and you won't stop off at any Gem stores or tailors!). Overall value for money for this kind of quality is amazing and was one of the nicest hotels we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Thailand. Highly recommended!

Guest Review “Fantastic Hotel”
We stayed here for five nights from 3 June 2011. The hotel is incredible with beautiful decor representing a Shanghai Mansion in the 1920s - 1930s. It was a wonderful find. Our rooms were spotless with enormous comfortable beds. The hotel was very tranquil with traditional Chinese music playing gently in the background in the public areas. We had the breakfast buffet each morning and this was excellent with a variety of hot and cold selections and local breakfast dishes. The staff are friendly and couldn't do enough for us. At night the restaurant the "Cotton Club" serves wonderful meals at reasonable prices and there is live jazz and singing for two hours from 9-11pm. Other guests were all commenting on how fantastic the hotel is. There are two free internet laptops in the lobby/lounge area. We can thoroughly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay for anyone going to Bangkok. Outside the hotel are plenty of restaurants and street food type eating places. There is a booking service at the hotel for tours. It was a pleasure to sit in the lobby/lounge and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There is a free minibar in the rooms with bottled water, soft drink, flavoured tea and snacks, replenished daily.
Room Tip: Rooms are all fantastic.

Guest Review “Lovely little hotel in a great location”
We stayed here for the last leg of our three week honeymoon. It was a great hotel with a quirky charm which used to be an old Chinese opera house. It is located in China town and only a 20 minute walk to the Great Palace which is a must see.
We read the reviews before we went and it is true that there is no natural light in the room so if you are looking for fabulous views of Bangkok don't stay here. We found that this meant the room was a good temperature and contributed to a romantic atmosphere.
The staff are great, and the food we ate in Cotton 'the jazz bar' was really good. Breakfast is an amazing all you can eat buffet, there is a real variety on the menu so there is something for everyone.
Our trip included bed and breakfast for three nights, free meal for 2 on the first night, airport round transfers and a day trip to the bridge over the River Kwai with elephant trekking . If you want a package like this contact the hotel directly as they will give you a very competitive rate.
This hotel really is excellent value for money!

Guest Review “Beautiful hotel - fantastic base in Bangkok”
My husband, two friends and I stayed in the Shanghai Mansion for three nights in June 2011, and absolutely loved it here! The Mei Hua rooms were beautiful, colourful and really quirky (not at all like your average, bland hotel room), with everything you could need, plus free drinks and snacks in the mini bar each day. The beds were very comfortable, bathroom well designed and supplied with toiletries, and the air conditioning worked well.
The rest of the hotel was stunningly designed too, and the staff were extremely polite and helpful. We went to the Cotton Jazz Bar for a night cap and were impressed with the range and price of drinks and the great performances.
The hotel is situated in the heart of China town, which is busy and full of great restaurants, interesting street markets and stalls. It definitely felt like diving into the heart of the city, and made a great base for both exploring (near to one of the fantastic river express boat stations) and for travelling onwards (near to the Bangkok's main train station and a 450 Baht taxi ride from the airport).
I was a bit worried about not having enough light after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, as I like to apply my make up in daylight - but even with the coloured windows it was absolutely fine and beautifully lit by both daylight and the lamps and lights in the room.
Friends who have seen our holiday photos have all loved the original look of this hotel - and are keen to stay here if they visit Bangkok.

Guest Review “Really unique hotel in many ways!”
The theme of the hotel is fusion/contemporary Chinese style.
I stayed at suite room #201 for one night.
Location is right in the middle of Chinatown and walkable-distance to MRT (subway system in Bangkok).
I've already fallen in love with this place since I walked into the hotel.
The "pond" area and those lamps are spectacular.
I'd recommend to stay on 2nd and 3rd floor to enjoy the view. 4th and 5th floor have small room with tiny bathroom according to pics I saw from other sites.
In the evening around 4 or 5pm, there is a lady in Chinese dress plays one of the Chinese music instruments for about an hour which I found it's very cool. At night jazz bar is also available in dining area.
Mini bar is complimentary....everything in the room is free of charge!
Breakfast is okay. Many items in Chinese, Thai, Western style.
Free shuttle to MBK mall and Wat Pra Keaw
Free Wifi
All in all, you won't be disappointed to stay at Shanghai Mansion regardless of the purpose to be in Thailand. ; )

Guest Review “Beautifully decorated hotel in a great part of the city!”
The staff was extremely friendly and gracious and helped answer all of our questions about getting around town. I contacted them in advance to ask for a late check-in and they were very prompt to respond and let us know that it would not be a problem to arrive after midnight.
The hotel itself is very quaint and beautifully decorated with lots of seats and spaces in the lobby to sit and relax. They also have two computers with internet service in the lobby. Although our room was pretty small, it was clean with lots of beautiful details. I especially liked the lamps.
The location is great right in the middle of Chinatown and although it felt a bit busy and frenetic outside, the hotel was quiet and relaxing on the inside. It also didn't feel touristy, so it was a chance to step outside and get a feel for real life in Bangkok. There are tons of sites to see nearby and it was walkable to all of the historic temples and the subway and skytrain stations.
A friend recommended this hotel to us and we would definitely recommend it to our friends as well.

Guest Review “Amazing boutique hotel!”

I travel to Bangkok quiet a lot on business and Shanghai Mansion is the only place I ever stay. Firstly I love Chinatown, all the evening and nighttime action, its always bubbling with excitement. Before I found Shanghai Mansion I always thought there was nowhere worth staying in the area.
In the Hotel they have a Jazz bar named Cotton which has great live music every night. Last time there I had Singapore noodle which were awesome.
Service is great, hotel is extremely clean and the design and decor is just amazing.
Love it all to bits.

Felt like I was in Shanghai in the early 1900. Clean safe hotel in Bangkoks China Town. Not to far from shopping and monuments. The streets in front of hotel really come alive in the evening, yet insde is quiet and peacefull. I really injoyed the live music from the Guzheng in afternoons by the fish pond in the center of the hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Happened to meet the general manager Tassanee Numar Cha while exploring the hotel, she was a very pleasant, caring person to talk to and seemed generally concerned how my stay was going. I felt the train and subway station where within walking distance or for those that don't like to walk a short ride away.

The best part of my stay was the service of the staff especially with the front desk. They were very informative and extremely helpful in guiding us on Bangkok. Although of the cities, we visited Bangkok was by far the worst, our stay at Shanghai Mansion gave us a comfortable relaxing retreat from the frustration of the city. Staff was excellent, the food was great, and the rooms were unique.

We absolutely loved shanghai mansion. The staff is quite friendly, cotton bar has great food, and the hotel is 5 star by any standards. The place was decorated in this chic Chinese way and there is so much detail from the lighting to the beds to the bird cages in the shower! Love that! Also don't underestimate the value of quality towels and linens. The towels are super high end and give you that shangri-la feeling for a much lower price! I will stay no where else!

Guest Review “Great Place - didn't seem like a "Budget Hotel"”
We stayed at the Shanghai Mansion Hotel for several nights in May 2011. We stayed at many hotels during our trip to Thailand so we were able to compare it to other options quite easily. I'll break up the review into several categories to make it easier for those reading.
Rooms
We stayed in a standard room which was very spacious. In fact this was one of the biggest standard rooms we've been in. We had a large 4-post king-sized bed complete with flat screen television. The sink was in the room rather than in the bathroom (shower with good pressure and temperature and toilet) which sounds a bit weird but it really wasn't. Lots of closet and drawer space including a desk. The room had a faux
window but really, this was fine as the room is very colorful and decorated nicely. There is a safe in the room which can hold a netbook. The outstanding features include free wifi in the room, fridge with waters, pop, and snacks, all of which were free. You also get two robes and slippers which was a nice touch.
Food
Breakfast was great and buffet-style. We did not do lunch or dinner here. With so much great food in Bangkok you really should go out for a bite.
Hotel Services
Oustanding. The hotel is modern and yet traditional at the same time. Great service as well. We asked for a scale and the front desk came up with a huge scale within minutes. Also, there is a free tuk tuk shuttle to the mall.
Location
It's a bit of a walk to the subway (10 minutes) but with taxis being so cheap its not that big a problem. The hotel is hidden away and could be hard to spot from a moving vehicle. Bring a map with you and memorize the corner because most taxis we used had a very hard time finding the hotel.
Conclusion
One of the better hotels we stayed at. Very different from your traditional hotel. We had the most relaxing nights here. Great place.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2011
Rather than follow the tourist hoards to Khao san Road we opted to stay in China Town and chose Shanghai Mansion for our stay. What a wonderful find this place was (great rate via Agoda helped...) Having been travelling for the last 7 months this place was a real gem - beautifully decorated rooms, a very comfy bed (firm,) and to top it all a proper shower - the shower had a large 'rain-shower' type head - it was wonderful to come in from the heat and dive under this to cool down.
We loved the vibrancy of China Town - at night the pavements come alive with street food stalls selling the most wonderful chinese food - we sat there for a good couple of hours people watching, soaking up the atmosphere and eating great seafood - it was bliss.
Very close to the main train station and the Golden Buddha is but three or four blocks away.
I really recommend Shanghai Mansion and China Town as a place to stay rather than a couple of hours sightseeing.

May 31, 2011
I love boutique hotels because they usually put effort into the design, and the prices are reasonable. Shanghai Mansion is unlike anywhere I've ever been. The design in all common areas fabulous. Hotel rooms frame an atrium with a fountain, so you feel like you're in a garden. Inside your rooms, you will be pleased with great touches like indoor bird cages. Cotton, their restaurant, has live music every night - great jazz groups. Such a nice touch. The value is great for Bangkok - service is comparable to big hotel names. If you appreciate unique decor, great value and service, this place is for you.

Stayed at the Shanghai Mansion based on the pictures and reviews. The room was exactly as described. The hotel was beautiful and I enjoyed walking out of my room to enjoy the view of the water garden. The concierge was superb and assisted us with helpful information and in getting taxis to our destinations. The tub was definetly large enough for two people, as was the daybed in our room. The only downside was the neighborhood (Chinatown is kind of run down) and it's proximity to shopping malls.

Guest Review “Charming boutique hotel, excellent value for money”
Let me start by saying that, if you're expecting the Mandarin Oriental or Banyan Tree, you will be disappointed. If your expectations are aligned with the price of the rooms, however, this is a remarkably charming boutique hotel that I would highly recommend. The main point separating this hotel from the flock is the décor - it's obvious that a lot of thought and care has gone into laying everything out with period Chinese/Chinoiserie effects and it felt very unique. The showers were wonderful, the beds big and comfortable, and the included breakfast service was entirely adequate and tasty.
One point worth noting - Bangkok is not a pedestrian friendly, European-style city with an easily walkable/accessible central core. No matter where you stay in the city, getting between the major sites simply is not practical by foot (especially in the heat). Chinatown is likely as good a district as any, given this, but don't expect everything you'll want to see to be within a few blocks.
Also, as its name implies, you'll really only find Chinese food in Chinatown. Or, at least, we couldn't find Thai food to save our life. The Chinese food in the area was exquisite, and the hotel was perfectly located for that, but you'll need to venture further for local food.

Guest Review “A wonderful pearl in dirty China Town”
This Hotel is a wonderful beautiful pearl in swamp vicinity. Sorry for such a comparison but China town is a real mess and dirty place.
We chose this hotel because great reviews and location (very center of Bangkok, Grand Palace, ~3km to MBK - Huge 6 story Shopping Center).
Shanghai Mansion has great and friendly staff. On arrival we were offered to sit and served with tea while all papers were done by Receptionist.
Initially we had problems with Security Safe in our room and the Hotel offered us to change the room. It was very kind. The day we checked-out we took a Tour to Floating market – we were allowed to late check-out upon arrival (~13:30).
Great Thanks to Ms. Patty (Assistant) - excellent English, very pretty, extremely helpful!
Rooms' design is awesome; it is so ancient and modern at the same time! Big Chinese stylish bed, colourful lanterns in the ceiling, spacious clean bathroom, hot/cold water.
Corridors are with Chinese paintings and lanterns, very quiet and cozy. Free internet (Wi-Fi on every floor). Free MiniBar in rooms. Security Safe.
Food was variable, good and diverse however too much Chinese (especially sauces).
+ Quiet, beautiful, cozy, great service, center of Bangkok
- China town (too wicked for me...)
Room Tip: Rooms on corridor bigger then next to elevator

Beautifully decorated. Helpful attentive staff.
This hotel is beautifully appointed in 1930's Chinese art deco style. Everywhere you look you see interesting decoration, art work and furniture. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. The hotel is located in the midst of exciting and bustling Chinatown and is but a short walk from Bangkok's main train station and the final stop on Bangkok's subway (MRT) line. The buffet breakfast is good and somewhat different from ordinary hotel fare. The Cotton Bar on the third floor has live music nightly and serves and interesting array of both Thai and Chinese dishes.

Interior design, amazing service, location
This hotel was truly beautiful - it feels like you're staying in a 1940s Chinese film. All of the staff go above and beyond what you expect and do everything with a smile, Thai style! We stayed in the Mei Hua room which was a lovely size with a walk in shower and imporantly, very quiet despite being in the middle of Chinatown. The hotel also provide a free Tuk Tuk service to the grand palace and to the famous shopping centre, MBK which I didn't expect and certainly saved money for us. I highly, highly recommend anyone to stay here - a stylish boutique hotel with a delicious restaurant (and live jazz band). Wonderful!

Guest Review “Excellent value and location, beautiful decor and great restaurant bar.”
This is a great hotel, and is excellent value. Very cheap for the level of accommodation. The rooms are gorgeous, and the bed was enormous. The 1930's Shanghai style is done very well - very classy but still colourful and quirky. The bar restaurant had a really good band, and the breakfast was really good. The only complaint I could make is that the staff are kind of loud in the mornings (early!) and can wake you up - but that might have just been our bad luck. I don't know if they realise as they were brilliant otherwise. Very friendly. Location is great. Walking distance of the main temples and palace etc. and Chinatown is a buzzy little area with lots of markets. Taxis are cheap to most places. We recommend it!

Guest Review “Exceeded all expectations...”
I found the hotel in the current STA brochure. The suggestion was that a smaller boutique style hotel often provided much better value for your money, and this was definitely the case here. Check in formalities were rapid and extremely courteous. Considering the hustle and bustle waiting for you on the street, the calm and tranquility of the hotel were more than welcomed. My room was quaint. A capacious and firm four poster bed was the centrepiece, but all other furnishings were equally comforting and comfortable. Wash sink in the bedroom meant that the bathroom could provide an enormous open-plan shower on wooden decking. The birdcage and lanterns were also nice touches, as was the large towel ladder. Staff are wonderful. Breakfast is varied and ample. And of course, the free wifi, more or less expected than hoped for these days, was quick and reliable. At atrium level, there is a wonderful water feature, stocked with fish (some of which can be delivered to your room in a bowl if you get lonely!). On weekends, musicians play to add still more ambiance to the already laid back atmosphere. Wonderful!

Book the Romantic package and the South African Red, wonderful in all aspects. Can't wait to rebook. Staff well trained, professional and with a sense of humour. Ajarn Anton

Guest Review "shanghai mansion - great hotel in cool area"
All in all a great experience. Me and a friend shared a twin room. Next time I may opt for getting a double each instead cos the rooms are so cheap. The twin for two people was totally fine though. Nice bathroom with big shower, flat screen TV, cool quirky design. Complimentary green tea and minibar (no alcohol) and breakfast included. All for less than you'd pay for a hostel back home.. The jazz bar (Cotton) is nice too, just hope they start to get some more people there. Bangkok's Chinatown is off the beaten tourist track but very central and within walking distance to the train station. Both taxis and metro will get you anywhere within 15 minutes or so. Don't miss the restaurants around the hotel nor the street food vendors in the back alleys. There are also a lot of things for sale at much lower prices than in for example MBK center.

Guest Review “Interesting decor”
Together with 2 friends, I went to Bangkok for shopping , for 3 days. The hotel decor was really impresive and pretty, and the staff were friendly. The rooms were very neat and clean, and the bed was very big and comfortable. The 3 of us could sleep on the bed comfortably with our own space!
Everything was great, except that the lights in the room was a tad dim, even though dim lights contributed to the "ambience".
Another thing was the location. I feel that the location was not awesome. We stayed in the heart of china town, where traffic can get congested. Also, the places where we wanted to shop at (Platinum Mall, Chatuchak etc) were a distance away from our hotel, and some taxi drivers demanded a high amount for transport.

we had only stayed here for one night but it was perfect for the short time we were there. It was in a great location in the heart of chinatown, the place comes alive a night! the rooms were clean and spacious i dont think i would recommend a long stay there only because the rooms are quite dark and ther isnt a view from the windows but on the whole for the price you pay you can't go wrong with this hotel...

Guest Review “Fantastic hotel”
I found this hotel in Lonely Planet. It lived up to the excellent reviews. Decor was fantastic - we stayed in the Mu Dan Suite. A lot of the rooms only had internal windows and looked quite small, so I would recommend our suite! It was very roomy and beautiful. The staff were very friendly, especially the bell boy.
I was hesitant to book because of the location, but it was fine. Other people have commented that taxi drivers wouldn't take them there. We got a taxi to and from the airport, but the rest of the time took the subway, which also links to the sky train, to go to the shopping areas, and the ferry to the temples. The subway is only a 5 min walk away. If you were going for a long time it might be easier to stay right in the new city area, but for a 3-4 day trip it was fine for us.

Guest Review We selected Shanghai Mansion based on the reviews on trip advisor & were pleasently supprised when we arrived. Arrived at the hotel slightly aggrivated with Bangkok airways, due to a long delay on our flight from Koh Samui & then to be told that no luggage had been put on the flight (that is not a single piece of checked luggage for any of the passengers).
On arrival at the hotel the receptionist commented on our lack of luggage and when we explained the situation to her she called Bangkok Airways for us & checked that the luggage would be delivered to the hotel later on, after assuring us that it was all in hand we were shown to our room.
The room was lovely & comfortable & the shower was nice and powerful, another reviewer complained about the flooring in the shower but I really didn't find it a problem. After freshening up we decided to hit Chinatown and see what was around, the hotel is located on a busy main road in & there are lots of little places to eat nearby.
What amazed me was that for such a busy location we could detect no noise from outside when we were inside the hotel. We then got a tuk tuk to Kohsan Road which cost 100 bhat & had a great time shopping & drinking etc. After hopping on another tuk tuk back to the hotel we found our luggage ready & waiting for us.
Next morning we headed down for breakfast & again we were pleasantly supprised, the waitresses in attendance bought us coffee & kept it well stocked up & made sure we had everything we needed. There was an egg station near the entrance & the chef made us whatever we asked for, however the restraunt manager will also take orders from you at the table & bring the food to you when it is ready.
All in all I would highly recommend this hotel, and did I mention the free mini bar? Unfortunately it only has soft drinks in it and a few snacks but this is the first hotel I have stayed in that had a free one!!!

Bang in the middle of China Town, surprisingly quiet and very clean. Reception staff very polite and helpful as are the concierge lot. Restaurant is nice though food is rather tame. Usually a band in the evening - some great music too but often not many guests.
Lovely rooms and layout with the only disadvantage being that the rooms are dark.
Probably ideal for romantic getaways. Biggest beds I've ever seen too!
No roaches which is amazing for Chinatown !
Free wifi.

A bthtub you could fit two people in along with a separate shower and separate toilet. Ample towels provided along with robes and slippers, soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hair dryer. Tea/coffee making facilities and mini bar. 7/11 just on the corner as you bear left out of the hotal front so you can fill fridge with your requirements. The hotel is right in the heart of China Town which is a very busy area. Main train station close by.

Guest Review “A great slice of Bangkok”
We love this hotel and have returned 4 times this year. Especially the deluxe rooms that feature communal terrace, tables and chairs for entertaining outside one's bedroom. Helpful staff, some of the best rates in Bangkok, extremely centrally located. Its only disadvantage: taxis can't find it, as the lobby is one floor up, above a supermarket. 4 star quality at 3 star prices, and a find. Some great dark rooms for sleeping of jet lag. Schedule your stay over a bustling weekend when Bangkok's Chinatown literally oozes onto the streets from an onslaught of sidewalk vendors and restaurants. Great bargain shopping in the area, and Chinese dining. Globetrotting Gourmet

Guest Review Lovely boutique hotel
At one end of chinatown, ease to get great local food
Nice boutique hotel attracting tourists from different countries. The ambience is nice but the accomodation floors are a little dark and quiet at nice, hence security should be stepped up a little. Internet access at some of the rooms can be inproved with more routers. Staffs are friendly but the massage spa they recommended near the hotel is over-rated. It is better to travel to Schuvimitt area for good professional ones. Breakfast is good with a reasonable spread. The bed is a little high for the elderly though, but overall a great experience

Guest Review "An elegant, classic haven from the buzz of Bangkok"
Great location for foodies, surrounded by incredible street food. The most luxurious bathroom set within the open plan bedroom, with a free standing bath designed for 2 people, sitting on a raised step.
this mock 1930's chinese hotel is very cool. the photos don't do it justice. what at first seems like a 'fun' boutique themed hotel is actually a very comfortable and stylish place to stay. the velvet chaisse-longue invites you into the open-plan room. a clever use of space with the sitting area, bathroom and bedroom didvided with black wooden, oriental dividing partitions. the bed was big enough for a whole family and the bathroom so indulgent that you could spend an evening just pampering yourself with the delicious complimentary bath products. the breakfast was average though a large choice of food is available. i'd recommend the pancakes and french toast. waitressing service was a little rushed and the ladyboy who served us looked a little too stressed and a bit shy. the other hotel staff were just as they should be....efficient when you needed them but in the background so you felt you were staying in your own appartment in an old mansion block. great hotel. would not hesitate to return.

Guest Review "Well situated character hotel in Chinatown"
charming decor in room and communal areas
though not easy to find - i suggest better instructions and a better map - this hotel is as good as it looks on the web, once you have got off the street and up the escalator into the large lobby area, festooned with coloured lanterns and enhanced by a large goldfish pool. my room had a beautiful 16-poster bed, lovely furniture, tea and coffee-making equipment. it was rather small, however, and the window turned out to be a fake - lighting behind coloured glass nevertheless giving a warm impression. breakfast was good,

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and could not fault it. The decor and rooms are amazing. Our room had a big comfortable bed and massive shower in the bathroom which was very powerful. You also get lots of free toiletries. The staff are really helpful and cant do enough for you. You get breakfast in the restaurant every day where you get a choice of full English, Asian, pancakes, healthy option, this was the best breakfast we had while we were travelling. We also ate in the restaurant one evening which was also good. There is free internet in the reception. The hotel is in the centre of chinatown which is really good and it is easy to get to other parts of Bangkok. There is also amazing street food almost outside the hotel in the evening. Will be returning to this hotel.

An extraordinary assault on your senses from the moment you enter. It's like stepping into another world. Our bedroom was red, plush but a little dark. Good facilities including kettle etc. Top quality toiletries. Good breakfast with lots of choice. Located in Chinatown its a little out of the way fro central Bangkok. Only negative was the the often dubious advice from the concierge who negotiated expensive tuck tuck rates and sent us to a dodgy travel agent claiming it was the the national torist office which it certainly was not

Worth every Bath. We totally enjoyed ourselves. Being in the mist of Chinatown seemed a bit odd when we first arrived, but we quickly realized that it was much more interesting than staying in the more touristic areas of Bangkok. Personally, I'd stay there again. The lobby of the hotel has a feel of decadent Indochina at the beginning of the century, plus the relief of modern technology (internet, air conditioning, etc.). Breakfast was not the best, specially the coffee, but then again, who needs coffee when you can have the best fruit juices in the world!

Me & a group of Friends (about 45 ppl) travelled to Bangkok End of Oct 10. We got to stayed at Shanghai Mansion Hotel due to the Thai Airlines packages. as for myself, i got to stay at Suite room as the package for lead in category has fully booked. What I can say about this boutique hotel is..EXCELLENT!! We reached the hotel in the afternoon via Coach. Immediately their bell man assisted us to unload all luggages and stuffs. We were brought to the lobby for check in. Everything went smooth until the moment we reached our rooms. The room was good & excellent. The interior design of the room is superb. What impressed us the most was their pond - landscape outside our room, which created a difference scenery & atmosphere. We stayed there for 2 nights. Breakfast was good..Unfortunately, we do not have much time to explore more about the hotel. Locatiion is good, located at China TOwn area which is full of food & ppl at night.

From the moment we arrived at this hotel the service was wonderful. They sat us down with a drink while we went throught the check in process, a lovely touch. The hotel is very quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of China Town. The rooms are attractively decorated. As soon as you enter the hotel you are struck by the quiet, cool and calm old world charm and atmosphere. Large spiral staircase, huge fish pond, big comfortable chairs to relax in. Mod cons such as free internet are also there. The rooms, with their 4 poster beds are again old world but very quiet and comfortable. Not for those wanting bright new slick 5 star stuff but I loved it and would go back. The only issue is taxi's did not know where it is so take a good map so you can direct them.

Guest Review "Quirky hotel, great price and location!"
My wife and I stayed in room 305 for 2 nights in Feb. Upon arrival, the porter was ready and willing to help us with our luggage from the taxi. Check-in was quick and easy and we received a refreshing towel and drink in the lobby. Staff informed us of breakfast time and gave us a free wifi internet card - we were then taken to our room. The room was very comfortable - lovely wide sofa, king bed, free standing bath, plenty of room to swing a cat. Outside the room is a small balcony overlooking the hotel atrium - great little nook to read a book. Location of the hotel is ideal - there was an excellent street restaurant set up the down the road from the hotel offering cheap and tasty thai dishes, I forget the name, but the staff were wearing green uniforms. There is a supermarket directly next to the hotel.

I would highly recommend this hotel - we paid about $95 per night, room 305.

Guest Review "Beautiful, atmospheric and in a great location."

We arrived at the Shanghai Mansion after a very cramped van trip from Hua Hin and a 45 minute tuk-tuk journey in peak traffic (when is it not in Bangkok??) so we were a little frazzled to say the least. As soon as we walked in the gorgeously perfumed air of the hotel and the wonderfully styled lobby made us smile immediately as we knew we had found a gem. The staff were lovely, check in was quick and our room was absolutely beautiful - vintage Shanghai style with chandeliers, velvet and a HUGE tub. Very sexy would be the room in a nutshell!

I later realised we had not recieved all of the package we had booked online which was meant to include flowers in our bath, flowers on the bed and fresh fruit in the room. I met the manager in the hallway by chance and she apologised and assured me it would be sorted out. 20 minutes later she comes back with another member of staff with beautiful lotus flowers for our bath in a wooden box and a bottle of champagne with two bars of Cadbury's Dairy Milk (she had picked up on my accent) and other assorted treats as an apology, which we greatly appreciated.

The bar that night (and most nights I think) had great live music and lovely staff. We only had breakfast there, which was delicious, so I can't comment on lunch/dinner but I heard from other guests the food was excellent. The location right in the middle of Chinatown is exciting and lots of fun and it's very close to all the other main things you would want to see in BKK. Can not recommend enough.

Had an amazing stay here in january over 3 days. arrived after midnight but easily checked in and was shown my room. the hotel is beautifully decorated with attention to detail. The breakfast was extravagant with plunger coffee, a choice of cooked meals off a menu (included with the room), dim sum and various asian dishes (stir fry noodles, curry, stir fry chicken or fish and so on).
Not as close to the metro as would like but it is walking distance - just not late at night by yourself. would definitely stay again and recommend it to all. The staff are incredibly friendly and very helpful and like you to keep the key at reception - handy so you don't have to worry about losing it!

Uniquness
My girlfriend and I stayed here for 1 night before returning home on our 2 week trip to Thailand. The hotel location seemed a bit of a gamble as we'd never been to Chinatown so didn't really know what to expect. It turned out the location was fine but a bit too busy for our constitution at that time (if you know what I mean). The hotel however was an oasys of calmness and just so different that the usual fancy hotel. The rooms were great (we had the basic one which I can't remember the name of) which was more than adequate for our needs. The minibar is also stocked with a few basics which are free whcih was a nice touch. Free wi-fi and a decent breakfast also made our stay very enjoyable and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.

We have stayed here 3 times now and it never fails to impress us.
Being in china town it is a little away from the main action but there is loads going on in china town itself which I think is sometimes overlooked by tourists.
Try T&K seafood just outside the hotel for the best seafood in bangkok at the best price.
The hotel is run by an American and he has done a good job here in creating a really nice environment to stay and with great and attentive staff.
I travel a lot with work and I would normally stay in the big chain hotels for that, but next time I am away on business I might choose to stay here instead for a unique experience.

Guest Review Beauty abounds at this Hotel!!
The beauty of this hotel lies within its walls. Everything is so pleasing to all of your senses. The room was exactly as pictured and yet the picture did not due justice to the room itself. The Tub, so big and relaxing need I say more!! Imagine taking a soak and hearing the notes from a Chinese Harp floating on the air as you relax. This was my own personnel experience.
The Hotel is off the tourist area hotels but well worth the money and extra time. The staff was fantastic and the interior was clean, you can sense the pride they have. The Jazz bar is a great way to unwind from a day of sight seeing.
The resturant had a good selection and the breakfast was excellent with a good assortment to choose from. What a great way to start off the day (mid morning for me). The staff did everything they could to help make the stay more enjoyable. Arrangements to go anywhere could be made at the desk.
The Daybed in the room was a surprize and what a great place to unwind, watch TV, or relax. The Bed in the room was so comfortable and plush.
I 'll be staying here again on my next trip!!

Guest Review An Oasis of Peace and Comfort in Bustling Bangkok
It's hard to imagine that you can step off the busy streets of Chinatown and find yourself in a setting that is tranquil, stylish and delightfully comfortable in every way. The rooms are beautifully appointed, the central court with the fishpond soothing after the mad bustle of Bangkok traffic, the restaurant serves excellent Asian food with a view to catering also for a European palate if the guests so wish and doubles as a pleasant jazz club in the evening and the whole hotel breathes a kind of old world, languid atmosphere. We stayed twice and were extremely happy both times, not least because despite the amenities and the central location (Central Train and Metro Station 10 minutes walk, the Palace and the stunning Wat Pra Keow a 60 baht TukTuk ride away, not to mention China town with its culinary and other delights, where highrises are mercifully absent), but also because of the friendliness and helpfulness of the (young) staff.

Guest Review Exceeded our expectations!
Me and my colleagues had stayed in Shanghai Mansion hotel, truly an oasis in the middle of the chaos of Chinatown. Though we had a struggle finding the hotel, this hotel is worth searching for. Upon entering the premises you will see Tops supermarket which you can easily get some stuff you like. As we entered the hotel we were welcomed bu a friendly porter who hosted us up to the reception area. The reception are has this red couch one will truly adore and bring that shanghai 1930 feeling (I only got to base this on what I've seen in the movies). The hotel has a lot of character and each corner has it's own story to tell. Had excellent breakfast and dinner at Cotton. Super yummy treats one would never get tired of having, I must commend the chef! Staff though a little bit knowledge in English, Janise who is the manager runs the floor and would be there right away to lend a hand, two thumbs up for the chef, Janis and Cotton team! During dinner Janis had shared some jokes we ended almost falling off our chair. Our bes was so huge and so is the tub! It was purely heaven especially when you are having a deep soak and you overhear the chinese instrument being played in the indoor pond. Elegance is overflowing awesome! They also allow you to wear some Chinese costume and props you can use when taking a photo! I'd say will recommend this hotel to all my friends and so happy we stayed in this hotel sadly it's only for 4 nights but will definitely be back for sure! Very charming hotel indeed :)

We were super wowed!

After our Phuket trip where we stayed in karon beach, we headed off to Bangkok. The hotel interior was amazing, furnitures are great and our suite room has HUGE tub too indeed was super wowed! The location isn't really the best though and hotel can't easily be found! Staff were helpful except for the guy in their reception who wasn't helpful nor friendly enough. Their porter however was opposite, very informative and helpful especially the afternoon guy. Chinese breakfast was glorious and were also impressed how the manager went out of her way when we required special diet for my partner who's allergic with dairy. She's bubbly and very funny! Will highly recommend this hotel to my family and friends!

"Great stay in lovely hotel"

I wanted a special hotel for our first night in Bangkok and liked the reviews I had read of Shanghai Mansion. I wanted a relatively small hotel with a sense of style and boy did I get that. I was meeting my girlfriend for the first time in two months and wanted it to be special. Check in was smooth and welcoming and the staff were exceptionally friendly. The room was just off th spectacular atrium with its chinese lanterns and fish pond. The room was beatifully decorated with lots of warm reds and dark wood. The hotle has a real sense of style. The room did not have a window so don't go for the view. The huge bathtub was behind a screen opposite the bed and there was a spearate shower room behind a glass door. We loved our stay there and think the style and decor are exceptional. The buffet breakfast was excellent too. Would highly recommend if you like boutique style and don't mind not having natural daylight in your room.

Guest Review Great vibe - a sanctuary in buzzing China Town Vibe, decoration, very clean. The hotel set up in 30ies Shanghai theme has such a great style, you can't stop wandering around and soaking in the atmosphere. You can even chillax at the fishpond and if you spot a fish you like, they will catch it for you and put the fishbowl up in your room so that you have your own personal pet during your stay. The minibar contains a small complementary selection of snacks and softdrinks. We'd definitely will go back for our next Bangkok visit, besides the overpriced airport transfer and the taxi driver still trying to add highway charges, everything was perfect.

Great experience.Decor, breakfast, comfort, quiet, fast wifi, jazz bands.

We loved this hotel. It was our first stop in Thailand and it got us in the asian spirit. It's convenient to train station, metro and river taxi with each a 10-15 minute walk. It's in Chinatown, which is a busy area, so maybe not for everyone, but if you want action there are great markets, restaurants and people watching outside the front doors. The hotel is festive and elegant and the breakfast included both buffet and made to order items (Asian, English and American.)

Guest Review Clean great size rooms in a handy location close to all the Bangkok attractions. But the best part is the great service from all the staff but Nuch on the front desk made the stay great.

Guest Review We ended up in this boutique hotel after our long trip from Europe and we were delighted. Never mind the fact that rooms have not real windows and most face the interior court but the rooms are so nice. Very china from 1930'. Breakfast is by far best from our trip and location is quiete favorable. I would not hesitate to go back if you like something different, something boutique and that the rooms are very well decorated
