“fantastique”

Bangkok !

"Fantastic "

We arrived late at night by taxi after several airplane , and then " shock " Chinatown is super busy at night , lights everywhere, cars, world : it felt to time square but release Chinese ! ! but luckily the hotel is remarkably soundproof : phew .... and refined , another time .... One evening there was a concert on the patio : wonderful the evening in the hotel bar a jazy orchestra (not very Thai for sure but super nice) the room was clean, very nice decor staff: Care for us The doorman even accompanied us to a massage parlor area : Cheap and try !
to do so : eat dinner in the neighborhood , grilled shrimp, Thai Singha beer , in "red" or those opposite is such short, we highly recommend this hotel to all those who stop in Bangkok !

“Lanterne rosse a Bangkok”

Desde o momento da rece??o at?

“Astonishing, cosy, beautiful, welcoming, entertaining!”

We arrived jaded from a long trip and dipped into this pool of sheer delight. I literally cried with awe when I saw our room. The Shanghai Mansion staff gathered around us when we needed them to make this the best hotel we have ever stayed in in our lives! The Siam Jazz band serenaded us in the foyer whilst we watched China Town unfold her mysteries. We were there for Christmas and loved every minute of it. The attention to detail in the rooms, the food, the everything!!! I am half tempted to write a rubbish review to make sure you lot aren't filling up the hotel and I can still get in next time....but, oh, I would never sleep well again if you missed out! Room Tip: “Book! Nobody we spoke to had a bad word to say about it. Even in Koh Samui people from Australia waxed lyrical about the Shanghai Mansion Hotel...shows what good taste they had!” (StupidTAScreenName)

“Beautiful decor creates romantic surroundings”

The photos on the hotel's website truly reflect what it looks like. Although I typically am not a lover of Chinese art, I fell in love with this hotel because of its d?cor. It felt warm and romantic and I loved that it was so different from even the most luxurious hotel I've ever stayed in.

We stayed in a Mui Hua room on the fifth floor and it was lovely, from its colourful, rich tapestries and art to the birdcage with pretend bird in the washroom. Although there was stained glass instead of windows to the outside, it just added to the d?cor.

Even the hallways were unique. And, the common areas of each floor were different. On the second level is a large rectangular pond, complete with goldfish. Also, it is surrounded by chairs and recliners that we enjoyed when we were resting before leaving for our flight home.

There was plenty of hot water and our bed was huge -- wider than a king- sized, I think. We also were given two user IDs and passwords for free Wi-Fi. There were two kimonos and pairs of slippers and a kettle with tea to help us feel comfortable in our room.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They let us store our luggage in their storage room at no additional cost from check-out time at noon till 7:30 p.m., when we enjoyed walking around Chinatown. Also, the concierge negotiated a rate of 400 baht plus toll fees with a taxi driver to take us to the Suvarnabhumi airport.

“ Lovely! ”

This hotel is definitely beautifully boutique! Had such a lovely stay here.
Complementary mini bar was a plus! Beautiful room made it great to come back to after a long day in Bangkok.
Despite the current renovations, the hotel was still clean and the staff
extremely friendly. The temporary breakfast bar was really good, the
omelettes are especially good.
The location of the hotel is quite good relative to MBK and Hua Lamphong
Underground. You can get to most places via the underground. We stayed here
at Chinese New Year so can't really comment on normal traffic as we were
mostly in a standstill or the road was closed.
Would definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a lovely Chinese style boutique hotel. Had a great stay.

Fantastic,

The rooms are beautifully decorated in antique Madarin style; the photos on there site represents exactly what they are. Great location & helpful staff It was great, the room was beautifully decorated quite a romantic setting. The location in centre of Chinatown made it very easy to walk just about every where. During the day a couple of minutes to the labyrinth of street markets then after 5pm the street just outside of the hotel turned into the night market; amazing food cooked right there in front of you. We felt very safe, no problems at all walking the streets, everybody was very friendly and helpful. If you want to go sightseeing during the day a short tuc-tuc ride to most of the attractions or take the BTS for an inexpensive ride to any part of the city.

Stylish, classic, beautiful old furnishings, right in Chinatown, an oasis of calm.
Nice helpful staff. nice breakfast. Because of the Chinese New Year parade out
front there were no taxis. So the bellman carried my heavy bag around the
corner and found me a tuktuk!

The renovations were no problem, and the improvements coming will be
great.

“Wonderful experience”

Being for the first time in Thailand, my husband and myself were unsure what to expect. However, our 4 night stay in Shanghai Mansion was an introduction to unforgettable holidays. The hotel staff were all very attentive, friendly, helpful and smiling. Especially Mr San, sorry if I misspelled the name, full of joy and so helpful. We felt we were treated as friends or family, not just as another customers. Separate KapunKa to the lady the manager - she was so caring, attentive, nice and always happy to be there for us. We had to change the room due to the wedding ceremony taking place just next door, so we have been lucky to stay in 2 very different but both very stylish and atmospheric rooms, one with the largest bathroom I have ever seen:) Always very clean, the breakfast delicious and a nice selection - needless to say we opted for Chinese and Thai food instead of boring eggs, bacon and beans:)) And by the way, the best place to eat in the evening is just 3 mins walk on the right hand side - look up for green T-Shirts!! Definitely recommended!

“Great hotel. Ok location.”

This is a great boutique hotel.
The room was lovely. We loved the Chinese style decor. The large stand alone bath was lovely. The breakfast was also very nice. The Dim Sum was very tasty as well as the western breakfast.
The location is in China town which is full of street food & markets. Very busy (no pavements, you have to walk in the street) & quite dirty.
There is a temple called Wat Traimet nearby (4 min walk) which has the largest solid gold Buddha. Worth a look.

“Great location”

This hotel is right in the middle of the action in Bangkok's famous Chinatown area. The rooms are large and decorated in an elegant style. A huge bathtub and Chinese style daybed were great features which we used. The restaurant was undergoing renovations so we had breakfast in the ballroom on the top floor. It was an amazing room. It was very quiet in our rooms. We would come back again.

“A Return Visit”

It is a few years since we started our travels from Shanghai Mansion and we were not disappointed by a return visit. It is still a calm haven amid the bustle of Bangkok and a great base. The rooms are stylish Chinese in warm colours and the interiors are quirky and comfortable with a large bed to help overcome the jet lag. We arranged a hotel car to transfer us from the airport, which was not as cheap as other options but was worth it for the convenience. There is a good choice for breakfast and the staff are very pleasant and helpful.

Arriving to the Hotel is a bit weird because you are bombarded with the neon fury of Chinatown. Don't let that fool you. The Hotel is very polished and clean. The staff is very friendly and they even have a nice jazz bar in the lobby. Bonus perk: A coffee shop next to the entrance.

This Hotel exceeded our expectations. All the staff was very friendly and helpful for the duration of our stay. The free minibar was a nice surprise upon arrival and the breakfast was wonderful with exotic fruit of the day and a cooking station preparing our eggs any way we desired. The Jazz band was most probably the best traditional Jazz Band in the city of Bangkok and together with the Hotel's special decor it truly gave us the feel of being back in the 1930's.

“Nice place in Chinatown”

Excellent location, nice rooms, wifi excellent. In the heart of Chinatown, didn't bother me that the restaurant was closed, as I stepped outside, was awesome street food. Some construction and associated noise, the shower was not working too good. Staff was professional, knowledgeable and courteous... want to especially single out 'Is' who was always smiling and helpful. Give that dude a raise.. Pretty good jazz band playing at night, but I had to discover the city so didn't see them play too much.. Rented a bicycle, the staff allowed me to store it safely behind the check-in area, didn't have to lock it up, they kept a watchful eye on it. All in all, a good experience and I would definitely go back to this place.. - James L

Unique & artistic design, centrally located at Chinatown with awesome food around, great breakfast

Absolutely love the design of the hotel. Every single corner of the place can be easily turned into awesome photographs. The cotton jazzbar was closed for renovation during my stay. The jazzbar was moved to the entrance in front of coffee bean. Thoroughly enjoyed the live performance every night. The good selection of breakfast buffet was a real plus. Many fantastic food stalls and eateries around the hotel. I highly recommend T & K seafood (located just few steps away from the hotel), the Tom Yum there was the best I ever tasted. Staff was friendly. Computers with internet connection for guests use at the lobby. 0verall, a great stay and I will definitely be back.

My wife and I stayed at this Hotel for 3 wonderful nights at the beginning of December. The hotel was fabulous but the star was Tui the Breakfast Restaurant Manager. The staff at the hotel is very friendly, but avoid telling the staff members at the entrance, where you want to go. Get a taxi by your own! The rooms are clean and good looking, but as mentioned before without windows. But to stay there only for the night, because there are so many things to do in Bangkok, it is absolutely ok. The breakfast is good and serves a good basis for the upcoming day!

“Classy joint in Chinatown”

One of the nicest places we stayed in Southeast Asia. Beautiful room, decorated to look like a wealthy Chinese merchant's home. Friendly staff, comfortable bed, nice shower, clean, and classy. I enjoyed the Chinatown location - everything was bustling and crowded and intense, but that's what I expect of Chinatown anywhere. Only a couple kilometers from the Royal Palace, or an inexpensive boat taxi away (which is a fun thing to do, anyway). I would definitely stay there again.

amazing and memorable

comfortable room, staff service, and location

although the surrounding is noisy but it is not unexpected because the location is in China town.
It is right to our anticipation that we are going to enjoy the night life and having a good Chinese food with reasonable price.
The hotel decoration is stunning and the room is very comfortable.

Great hotel with lots of great food nearby

Unique décor, Big bathtub, near good eateries

It was a very comfortable stay. Free minibar. A lot of channels on tv. Walked back to hotel in a matter of minutes from seafood dinner at TK seafood restaurant. Intricate Chinese details of the past like the door bolt. Just downstairs by the hotel lobby is a Coffee Bean Tea Leaf and also an open bar where musicians perform live. A very nice place to stay indeed.

Gorgeous boutique hotel, step back in time

Customer service, buffet breakfast, very comfortable beds, good air-conditioning.

Unfortunately no airport pick up was available as the hotel has fewer staff, but faxi's from the airport are easy and cheap. Staff were waiting for us (at 1:30am) and welcomed us with cool flannels and delicious tea. Step back in time in this beautiful boutique hotel, visually spectacular. Buffet breakfast catered with both western style food and delicious Thai style dumplings, steamed buns, noodles and so much more!! Step outside into busy Chinatown and enjoy the cultural experience.

Attentive, friendly and very helpful staffs. Clean room. Beautiful room We were quite pleasantly surprised of my stay at the Shanghai Mansion Boutique Hotel, as they took the effort in remembering the finer details of my booking. E.g. a beautiful Birthday cake was gifted to us for my wife's birthday. This hotel exceeds our expectations in every aspect. I would highly recommend this Hotel to all my friends going to Bangkok.

“Love this hotel!”

We stayed here for 1 night at the end of our trip to Thailand. We had already stayed in Bangkok earlier in the holiday so it was great to see another part of it - Chinatown is extremely colourful and exciting! The hotel is in a great location, on the main road and close to loads of restaurants, the market and the Temple of the Golden Buddha. It's also only 100 baht to get a tuk tuk to Khao San road from here.

The hotel itself is really beautiful and we loved our room. It was really clean and comfortable and stunningly decorated. We had a huge comfy bed, massive bath and the free mini bar is a lovely touch! The also provide you with a map of the local area, a short guide on some common Thai phrases, free wifi and DVDs available to borrow.

We didn't get to sample breakfast as we had to leave too early. The staff were all very welcoming and spoke great English. For the price we paid we were really, really impressed with this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

This really quite a funky hotel. Design is Chinese inspired in keeping with the chinatown location. It has been done very sensitively with a nice mixture of modern style and traditional. We arrived late at night and unfortunately had to leave the next morning but it was still a memorable experience.

Great hotel in Chinatown!!

The staff here is AMAZING!!

In the middle of Chinatown. There is a lot of food options to eat right outside of the hotel. Also, there are some really great massage salons. The staff was amazing. We arrived at the hotel around 3am due to a delayed flight. The staff was so nice from the moment we stepped out of the cab. The rooms were so adorable and the decorations were so unique. For the price of the stay, it was absolutely worth it. I will definitely be staying here again and I highly recommend it for your stay in Bangkok

“Wonderful Experience ~”

A BIG hearty thank you to Mr S for the biggest brightest smile ever and making our stay in this warm and comfy hotel such a lovely one.
Kudos to Ms Tui for her entertaining narration and explanation during the cooking class and no small thanks to the chef for the wonderful 3-course Thai meal which my fiancee got to learn and we got to enjoy feasting upon. Last but not least, special mention of Lai, our designated hotel driver for his wonderful recommendations to some of the attractions in and around Bangkok.
It was a wonderful experience made possible by them :))

We had an AMAZING cooking class at the hotel provided by Chef Tonglor and hilarious Ms. Tui, every ingredient explained, funny outfits on, photos provided by management, exciting and interesting at every step, lots of questions precisely answered and finally the pride of eating our own yummy-yummy thai dishes... This cooking class was the highlight of our holidays, 2 hours of great and unforgettable fun. Thanks a lot!!!

wonderful shopping and restaurant options

it is in the middle of the china town, so whenever you step outside, there will be food.

We chose this hotel because of the reviews and decorations and design of the hotel. But what is best about this hotel is their staff and the location. The staff are very friendly and will do all that they can to please. We booked for three nights and didn't like the first room we stayed because it was so dark. Thus we asked to move to another room and it was done, just like that, no fuss at all. The second best thing is the location, you're in the middle of china town! Okay, it's not close to any BTS or MRT but there are tons of bus lines pass through every minute. Unfortunately, it would be difficult for non-Thai speaker to take the bus but it is so cheap and very convenient to bus every where. Though, we did take Taxi and it is still pretty cheap because the hotel is centrally located in the middle of everything. More importantly, if you love food - all kinds of food are here, you won't be disappointed.

“Stylish taste of China”

Booked the hotel based on the website and the hotel did not disappoint. The hotel is smack in the middle of China town which is brilliant if you want to explore the area. We went to eat out on the street and there are great pop up restaurants serving great seafood. The hotel is comfortable and the beds are massive. Depending on your room type size wise the rooms have a minimalistic style which I like but if you are looking for frills and cushions it is not that style. The breakfast are good well cooked food choice of local and western food for breakfast and the staff are friendly. The Cotton jazz bar is also cool very calm in all the madness of China town. During our stay there enterprise works happening in the hotel but it did not have an effect on our stay. There is also complementary water and snacks in the fridge that was very welcome after sight seeing. In all this hotel is stylish without being stuffy, relaxed and different. My only bad point is that there is no spa.

“Romantic stay in the heart of Bangkok”

This hotel was exactly as we saw in the pictures. We just loved the ambience and romantic feel about not only the room but also the hotel itself. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Our bags were cared for a hot drink was served and a damp washer was provided. Our host Mr S was so friendly and helpful and we hope to meet him again one day. The buffet breakfast cost us approx. $9 (aus) and was wonderful value with lots of variety. The restaurant host Jamoran was very helpful and professional. We would love to stay here again. It is in the heart of China Town and the perfect place to explore Bangkok from. You can also walk to the ferry and catch a cheap boat 50cents to many of the city's attractions. We could not have wished for a better stay for the start of our Bangkok holiday.

“Wonderful budget hotel”

The odd person trashes this place and for the life of me I can't figure out why. Beautifully appointed (romantic} rooms and a staff that is overly helpful to a man/woman. Great beds for the price range, free water, sodas, cookies and chips in the wet bar that is replenished each day. WIfi works perfectly in room, 2 laptops for internet access in lobby.
On noisy street in Chinatown, but my room was very quiet. Chinese restaurants and street food galore outside the door. Has restaurant and jazz bar that I haven;t been to. One km walk to Rachawong pier and ferries. 100 baht tuk tuk ride to RR statiom, What more could you ask for? And for US$50 in shoulder season when on sale. A steal.

“Awsome”
Perfect location, gentle staff and the most important, very, very beautiful hotel and rooms.
It's in Chinatown, near to Hua Lamphon train and underground station; near to the main touristic spots in Bangkok. The day and nightlife in Chinatown is great.
The chinese style decoration in really, really nice. It looks you are in China during the XIX century. Full of beautifull details, like the fish fountains, the hanging lamps over it. The pictures available in this page show exactly what it is. Everywhere you smell a jazmine perfume.
Booking online we pay two times in October half price, which make it really cheap.
Do not know about the breakfast nor the restaurant. We book the room only. May be was a mistake, but we choose experiencing the chinese food of the area, and we liked it.
Room Tip: We stayed in two, bot identical. So I imagine it does not matter

This was our first stop after a long flight from Ireland to Bangkok. We were welcomed with a cool towel and tea which was great, stayed here for two nights and the staff couldn't of done enough for us, haven't come across service like this in our 4 weeks traveling around Thailand. Hotel is out of the centre but only a 50/60 baht taxi ride away from everything so that shouldn't put anyone off. We will be back some day

“Romantic stay in the heart of Bangkok”

I've chosen Shanghai Mansion because;
1/ Small Hotel
2/ Location in China Town
3/ Loved the rooms on the Internet
4/ Affordable
5/ Bed &Breakfast Package
6/ Restaurand Onsite

We were in Bangkok for 1 night last year in October & hated staying in the city centre. Shanghai Mansion was attracted to us due to being located in China Town plus it is a small hotel & we find small hitels more inviting than the big commercial hotels with 100+ rooms & big high rises.
We also found the prices very affordable.

Room Tip: our room was great in 515

Shanghai mansion is definitely the hotel that we will stay at whenever we are in Bangkok, not only is it in a great spot but the staff especially Tui and chef Thong made us feel like welcome guests not just paying customers, our niece celebrated her birthday during our stay and nothing was too much trouble. We had the mu dan suite which was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean.

Best choice
Design, people, location, services And although it is on the busiest street in Chinatown, the rooms are set back from the street and are quiet. Centre of Chinatown. And easy access to transport means you can get where you want to go very easily. Design chic in the heart of Chinatown. Staff are very helpful . We booked because it was highly rated, and iits design and style are so distinctive. It was the best choice we could have made . Tuk tuk ride to the nearest metro station, HuAtoki Lamphong, should be 50 baht, but may go up to 70 in heavy traffic. The hotel offers free tuktuk rides at set times of day to favorite sites such as the Grand Palace and MBK shopping centre. Book the day before - they are popular.

Quirky design hotel on a budget

Nice atmosphere, big bed, in the heart of Chinatown
I had a wonderful weekend at this hotel. The room was big enough, clean, with a distinctly Asian charm. Breakfast was plentiful with a slant towards Chinese/Thai food. Staff was a bit spotty on their English but very friendly and helpful. Overall a great stay and good value for money. There was some construction going on in the lobby but nothing that bothered too much.

“Quaint, good-value hotel in Chinatown”

I spent one night at the Shanghai Mansion in Bangkok before a conference. The price was quite reasonable (about $70 USD) and it was convenient to walk to a couple of attractions (Wat Traimit - the largest seated Buddha) and the narrow, crazy streets of Chinatown. I had just arrived after a long 20 hour flight, and it was lovely to be greeted with a cup of tea and a cold hand towel while I waited for my room key. In October 2013, the lobby was under construction, so do not expect a WOW upon arrival. After a so-so entrance, my room was a plesant surprise. I opted for a Mei-Hua (plum blossom) room, and it had everything i needed, including complimentary water and mini-bar snacks, a silky robe and comfy slippers, a beautiful large rain-shower with a bird cage feature, and a very comfortable bed. The decor was chic and elegant, with colored glass windows, beautiful textile-art and a 4 poster bed.
Since I was so tired after my 20 hour flight, I had dinner at Cotton, the club on the 3rd floor of the hotel. The food was fairly good, and there was a fantastic live band that played. I am sure if I had been more awake, I might have ventured out more, but after a long flight and an afternoon walking around, I was having trouble rallying. They offer a free shuttle to the Grand Palace, which you have to book in advance as seating is limited. Otherwise, a taxi will cost you about 70 baht (that was the cost for a taxi back to the hotel with traffic). The customer service was gracious and friendly. It was a perfect place to stay. Excellent value!

I loved staying at this hotel! It had so much personality and the rooms are lovely. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great nightly jazz in the restaurant. Traffic in Chinatown can be crazy, but it's not too far a walk to the subway. Chinatown blooms at night and is a great place for dinner. I will definitely stay at this hotel again. It is beautiful and affordable!

“Great place to stay in Bangkok.”

I loved everything about this place. Its location in Chinatown puts you right in the middle of tons of great food options. The hotel itself is nice and clean and the staff are very helpful. "Is," at the front door, was especially helpful when I needed help figuring out how to get somewhere in the city. I would stay here again in a second.

We stayed at the Shanghai Mansion for 7 days in total during September 2013, the hotel is undergoing some renovation work but that did not effect our stay.

The exterior of the hotel belies the interior, inside the hotel is beautifully designed and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive, a special mention must go to IS from concierge who is always there with a friendly smile and happy to help.

The interior of the rooms are of a Chinese style with vibrant colours and dark woods excellently appointed and a pleasure to stay in.
The rooms are also spotless cleaned regurlary and mini stocked daily.

The price was around ?30-40 a night for a September stay which I felt was very reasonable. Located in the middle of Chinatown there are dozens of eateries on your doorstep and a short tuk tuk ride to the Koh san road and markets. An excellent hotel with excellent staff.

:)

Room Tip: Rooms are not too different you pay extra for a bath but you would hardly use it.

“BEST RESTAURANT IN TOWN!”

I can't say enough nice things about this place. I never write reviews but thought what the heck.... I'm from Australia and have been to Bangkok/Phuket 4 times. This is the only restaurant that I have really loved and always go back to. The best experience I ever had was dining there on the chinese new year last year, the street was closed down awaiting the arrival of the king and dancers performed right infront of the restaurant and the staff brought the restaurant out onto the street it was nothing short of AMAZING!! The service was so quick and I was eating the best fried rice, deep fried chicken and noodles I'd ever had for a lousy $5 and never once got sick, winning!!! lol the deserts were so nice I loved the honey and ice cream and more importantly the service from the staff was so good. They put on the best buffet breakfast and the coffee actually tasted like coffee, not the mud they served me at the Asia Hotel :( Also the jazz bar was so cool and the cocktails tasted so good!!! Please if you haven't dined here yet then do so :))) It will not disappoint I promise!!!

“We loved our stay!!”

Very Gracious , wonderful, kind staff. We can't say enough good things about the hospitality. The rooms are decorated tastefully with a true Bangkok Chinese flavour. Immaculately clean and lots of amenities. The breakfast is fabulous!! Give yourself a treat and stay here. We'll be back for sure!
Room Tip:
“We were on the fifth floor.. I think they are all probably good with high standards. Can get a little hall noise.. but our experience was excellent! Air conditioning system is very good! Bottled water, pop and cookies in fridge are provided. As are robes, slippers and toiletries. Enjoy! Brian and Anne” (BrianandAnne2013)

“So Good We Stayed Twice”
Love Love Love Shanghai Mansion, our first trip to Thailand, we had a pitstop in Bangkok's Chinatown for 5 days before travelling onto Chiang Mai. Check in was effortless accompanied with cool towels and a refreshing beverage. We were promply shown to our room, a beautiful suite with seperate living area, free standing bath, seperate shower & toilet. The bed was absolutley huge and sooo comfy. The staff were so helpful and the breakfast included in our price was fantastic. The nightly jazz band was a real treat with amazing talent. We loved Shanghai Mansion so much that we cancelled the hotel we were due to stay in on the return leg of our trip in favour of having a second stay here... would recommend it without hesitation.

“A little gem of a find”

My wife and I have been travelling around the world for 10 months and arrived in south Thailand, but due to family circimstances had to go home early so flew to Bangkok and booked this boutique hotel at last minute. We splashed out a bit and opted for one of their suites. Got a taxi from airport 380 baht. Were met at the door by a courteous and smiling S. He seated us in reception and brought us cool lemon scented face towels and some tea. The check in process was easy and he then took us our room. It was really beautiful and spacious. Attention to detail was evident everywhere. Free mini bar in our room. Free standing bath, separate toilet and shower. Shower amazing. We went for drink in bar and there was live jazz/blues music being played by 4 piece band. We were going to head out to explore the neighbourhood but decided to leave that till the following day. The band were really great and the whole atmosphere was so relaxing and mellow. Staff were so attentive without being in your face. So friendly and I even had a chat with some of the band members after their set. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an alternative to exclusive 5 star hotels. Not at all stuffy and interior of hotel is fab.

We've been to Bangkok many times and wanted to stay somewhere a bit different, this was a terrific find. The hotel has so much character, the rooms are really nicely decorated and it's a culinary treat to stay in Chinatown. The staff were very helpful and welcoming, breakfast was a good combination of chinese/western/thai. We would definitely come back!

Stayed for 2 night with my mature aged daughters and can only say "wow". The thoughtfulness, service with a real smile and walking distance to all transport and tourists attractions. Breakfast was excellent and the jazz bar was the best. Imagine the music of Louie Armstrong while you have a cocktail. It is safe and you are well cared for by the fantastic staff. Amazing

Best hotel ever!Stayed in many 5 star hotels but this hotel is totally unique. As the ad says it is straight out of the 1930s with amazing d?cor and many antiques. There is a rectangular fish pond that dominates the first floor and the suites are set around it. Ours was at the far end and we felt like royalty. The room was beautiful with some wonderful little quirky features like a wooden bar as a second lock. The breakfast was good with yummy dim sum as well as the usual variety of European and thai offerings. At night the place comes into its own when the jazz starts around 8:30 the band is sensational and play music from the 30s to 50s Fly me to the Moon, Blue Moon, Jack the Knife etc the cocktails are great to at 160baht I recommend the Violet Pearl. The entrance was under renovation and management allowed members of our party who smoked to set up their own little bar one evening including getting cold drinks including beers or pre mixes from the 7/11. To top our 10 day stay off we were taken by the manager on a short local tour where we sampled a couple of local delights including black jelly then dinner. We loved this place and can't wait to go back next year and meet up with our friends from Oman. People who don't like this hotel should maybe limit themselves to the sterility of one of the many chains where you have no idea what country you are in or maybe a backpackers if you don't like the price. Room Tip: Go with the little bit extra for the suite style room if you are staying more than a couple of night

“Plenty Choices for breakfast”

had a breakfast here before heading to floating market. its a non-halal restaurant. but we found bread and butter as an alternative, yogurt, fresh fruit, juices and coffee.. enough for a few hours adventure today.. the restaurant had other choices like porridge, dim sum, fried food, scramble egg and rice.. decoration is exclusive but i love the living area better. this restaurant located at level 2 connected via lift or 2 stares.. one at main area and another one, the swirl stairs inside the restaurant link to the lobby/waiting area/receptionist area.

“Wow!”

We loved staying here! I was dubious because of the other reviews we had read on here, but it was a fab place to stay. We booked a suite, just to the side of the pond. When we arrived we had a lovely welcome by a very helpful receptionist. The hotel gives you a map of the street food streets and walking tour of the temples - both of which we found useful. The hotel is on one if the busiest roads in china town, but we heard no noises from the street from our room. Also, on some review I had read about not having windows in the room, this worried me... However, our room had windows and curtains draped over them, but they only opened about 5cm, to be honest this was not a problem for us, the air-con was essential because it was so hot outside and the views wouldn't have been great, just a busy street! We had a great time exploring the streets nearby, eating so many different foods and visiting the temples, it was a great location for this. The decor was lovely, we had a huge free standing bath as well as a rainfall shower, the bed was so comfy, lots of space in the room. We ate breakfast on one of the 3 nights we stayed, it was good, a buffet, I would suggest going out though because there is so much choice nearby! We would recommend and would definitely stay again!
Room Tip: Book a suite, worth the little bit extra.

Well designed boutique hotel

Staff at the hotel, Location and Hotel interior design
All the staff in the hotel was very friendly throughout my stay whether its check in/out or dining. The hotel interior design is nice and fits the theme to stay in "Chinatown". This hotel is just stone throw away from restaurants, shopping streets and massage parlors. You can get a taste of top seafood, shark's fins and bird's nest during evening time as it is bustling till late! During the day, stroll down to Sampeng Lane for cheap wholesale stuffs as it is not available after 6pm. However, if you want to make a trip down to city areas like Siam or MBK, you will need to take a taxi as MRT/BTS is not conveniently located around the area.

“Nice hotel, nice rooms”

The hotel is clean, rooms are nice and spacious and service is OK. We didn't have any problem during a 4 night stay and since we got an Agoda promotion we got very good value for money. If you don't care being in Chinatown (busy streets full of cars and food stalls, what we actualy enjoyed) Shangai Mansion is perfectly located, it's in one of the main streets in Jaowarat (but you don't hear any noise from the rooms), near to the river and Hua Lampong metro station, although it isn't much easy to get there if you are carrying the suitcases: better get a tuc tuc or a taxi if you haven't been there before.

“Beautiful Hotel and Great Service!”

My husband and I stayed here the first two nights of our honeymoon. It was a wonderful welcome to Bangkok! The hotel is really really lovely, beautiful details everywhere. The staff was amazingly friendly and very helpful when we needed anything...from a tuk tuk to breakfast in bed. The food is pretty good, loved the dumplings at breakfast. We did not try Cotton for dinner, so I can't speak to that. The location in China Town is very cool, a totally different feel from the rest of Bangkok. It is pretty central to all the attractions, we never paid more than 200 Baht (6USD approx.) to get anywhere, and we probably overpaid a few times. We bought the airport pickup service when we booked the room, and I am SO glad we did. We arrived very late into Bangkok, and it was great to not have to worry about it. We would definitely stay here again! Room Tip: Ying Hua Suite was fantastic!

“Shanghai Mansion"

This is my first time to Bangkok Chinatown after so many years. Was looking for a place to stay for a night and decided that this trip to Bangkok, I want to search for food. Decided to stay in Chinatown area and was browsing through which hotel to stay when I came across Shanghai Mansion. Read the reviews and decided to try it. No regrets! The hotel is situated in Chinatown and many many restaurants and food stalls are all within walking distance from the hotel. The room (I reserved MUDAN SUITE) was beautiful..very very chinese style..something different and we even had a 4 poster bed! The rooms is quite big but I do hope they can install a brighter lighting as it was quite dim (maybe its their idea to dim it so as to make it more romantic) The hotel breakfast was wonderful too! I will stay there again when I go back to Bangkok and this time I must stay more than 2 nights in that area and in Shanghai Mansion.

“A very authentic hotel!”

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights whilst in Bangkok and although there was building work going on the hotel was great and really well decorated. We stayed in a standard room which was lovely and had a free mini bar which was restocked daily. If we visited again I would pay for a larger room possibly with a window or view. Great location in China Town and we could easily get tuk tuks or taxis to places for around 100THB which was great and easy.

Great service, comfortable, good location The bellboy was very friendly and helpful, the room is cosy and clean and it is located at the main street nearby restaurants and massage parlours I had read many good reviews about this hotel so I booked for 3nights although its a 10minute walk to the MRT station. The staff was friendly, especially one of the bellboys with a good smile and greeting all the time. The interior design is amazing, I stayed in the cheapest Mei Hua but if I return, I will definitely spend a bit more on one of the suites, I had a look and they look awesome. The nearby restaurants are good, just a few steps away, such as the seafood restuarants which only operate at night. The massage parlours are good and cheap.

Oasis The location, the staff, and the peaceful environment within the hotel are hard to beat. The new coffee shop will be a valuable addition. Bangkok is there, as soon upon leaving the front door. Placed in the middle of this thriving city is the Shanghai Mansion. Within that oasis staff will ensure the enjoyment of the guest is the priority. The sights and sounds of Bangkok are on the doorstep and the variety of food unbeatable and inexpensive. The perfect place to stay within the city.

“Characterful with helpful staff”

This hotel certainly has plenty of character, with a beautiful hall for guests to relax in. In two separate stays during our trip we had a deluxe room, which was spectacular - spacious and comfortable. The smaller 4th floor room was also what you'd expect of a good 3/4 star hotel. Excellent breakfast, huge range of Asian and western choices. Staff invariably friendly and helpful. Good free tuk tuk service to the grand palace at certain times of day. Just ensure you book a day in advance! Fun area in Chinatown, plenty of good street food about and the staff are happy to offer recommendations. If you suffer from jet lag badly, ask for a room with natural daylight. Some rooms have none and this affected our sleep pattern.

love this hotel so much. so beautiful, so nice. big room with all the amenities. tv, kitchenete, basin, bathroom, big cabinets, fridge, make up area, carpet and the most important thing, the big supersize honeymoon bed..haha.. for a backpacker like us, it's such a heaven to sleep on the very comfy bed. the interior of the hotel make us feel like in old china dynasty with the pond in the middle. old chinese painting. everything is nice.

"amazing, beautiful rooms, friendly helpful staff"

fabulous, character rooms which feel luxurious. The free mini bar, silk dressing gowns, good quality toiletries, snacks around the communal seating areas, lovely surroundings, comfy bed, deep large bath tub all make for a perfect stay. The hotel and rooms were spotless and the staff were all very polite and helpful. The location wasn't perfect for the sites and tourist shopping but they run a free shuttle to the main attractions and it's easy to get about if that's what you want.

“We loved every minute at Shanghai Mansion in the heart of bustling and dynamic China Town”

We loved every minute at Shanghai Mansion in the heart of bustling and dynamic China Town in Bangkok. Designed and decorated like an ancient Chinese manor house, a plethora of decorative wallpapers, paper & silk lanterns aplenty, carvings and prints, an ornate birdcage with faux birds in our bathroom. The hotel is beautifully and elegantly decorated in stylish 1920s/30s Chinoise style. The foyer spills to the street with no wall of glass to break the flow to the vibrance beyond. Attention to detail was everywhere. We booked the Mei Hua - (Plum Blossom) room which was simply lovely. It was a bit tight for space owing to the elegant king-size 4 poster Chinese bed. Next time (and there will definitely be a next time) we will book a larger room - we're excited to try them all! Whilst there were renovations going on in the foyer, this was cleverly hidden by printed panelled corridors. There was no evidence of building works to cause any disturbance. In fact, we are allured to come back to see the reveal of what lies behind the panelling! I am sure it will be a magnificent, elegant space. Service was impeccable and responsive. Whilst China Town is a little harder to access from public transport, tuk tuks and taxis are readily available and the aromatic, visual and aural feast of people and food spilling over footpaths is an experience in itself.

“The Mei Hua rooms are a little tight for space however are good value for money and beautifully done. Each floor has a different avenue""of room styles. For a longer stay maybe try one of the bigger rooms.” (DemarvellousKaren)

“What a fabulous experience”

Having finished a tour of SE Asia we wanted a little luxury and this was definitely the place to be. The staff were helpful and friendly and greeted you with a drink and fresh towel before taking you up to the large beautiful room. The rooms are comfortable, you can relax on the sofa and enjoy the free mini bar, use the free wifi, soak in the large bath or indulge in a long shower before settling down in the silk dressing gown. The area outside the room is an open communal seating area with games, snacks and even a vintage little room where you could take photo's of yourself l;ike something out of a movie. The food in the restaurant was good and breakfast was the best we'd had in the 3 weeks of travelling. In terms of location you are in the china town district, and the hotel runs a free tuk tuk to the main attractions and shopping centre to help with getting around, but even if you took a taxi it is not expensive. The staff were fantastic and we got amazing value for money. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Bangkok.

“Pretty hotel!”

Outside the building, you see nothing special but once you enter into the corridor leading up to the lobby (2nd floor) ... it is like entering into a different world. The furniture are so 1930 - 1940s that you just stepped into part of the history of how old Shanghai may look like. Every corner of the hotel is just full of amazing looking piece of history! The room is filled with many unique furniture like the wardrobe with pins to lock the doors, huge king size bed and of cos a big bath tub right in the middle of the room! I love it! Walk around the hotel and discover unique stuff around. Is a very good experience! “There is a Hua Lamphong MRT station near by but due to the construction of the road, the walking will be a bit further (about 10 - 15 mins). Turn left upon out of the hotel and just walk straight till you see a diagonal intersection and look for the sign.”

It was a decently priced hotel and included breakfast. The reviews on tripadvisor were positive.

The bell man, the male staff at the cotton resturant and the man in the front office were all very helpful and kind to me. They answered all of my questions and made me feel welcomed. They also provided me with some good tips because I was travelling by myself.

“nice place to stay”

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights, the rooms are very clean and quiet, really nice to come back to after a day out in busy bangkok. The rooms are dark but we found that good as we were sleeping in till 12 noon. The food at the restaurant was nice. The young men working at the reception area were very helpful if you needed to get a tuk tuk or taxi somewhere, they would help you hail one down and discuss a price. The downstairs bar was great to sit at and have a drink while looking out to some different and wonderful sights on the streets.

A pleasant stay
friendly staff, theme design

Generally it was a pleasant stay in this hotel. I would like to extend my our appreciation to the staff working at night shift. I found them to be super friendly, helpful and cheerful. A special thanks to the staff who helped us to carry our languages from ground floor to reception. He always serve us with smile despite he needed to carry such heavy luggage for us in the mid-night.

A beautiful beautiful hotel, we loved the atmosphere, decoration, attention to detail - in fact every detail of our stay. Our room was a little small so would love to upgrade to a bigger room next time. Wish we had more time to enjoy Shanghai Mansion. We love the Chinatown location - a vibrant & colorful part of the city. Will most definitely return - excited to see the renovations complete and what surprises are in store behind the partitions!!

“Oasis in busy Chinatown”

We stayed 5 nights here during our Thailand holiday. The whole hotel is decorated with a lot of love. Everywhere you look, you see great Chinese furniture. Also great: the lovely pond with koi fishes and the Cotton Club with nice food (try the stir fried spinache!) and - when you're lucky - a swingin' jazz band. We became fans of the The Siam Swing Jazz Band immediately :) And let's not forget the best of all: when you step outside of the hotel, you're in the heart of Chinatown with al its smells, sounds and colors. Not so great: the high-fat-English-breakfast, but hey, when you're a fan of that... A little annoying: the tour guy sitting behind his desk in the lobby and selling very expensive tours and telling you that Chinatown is dangerous and that there are a lot of gangsters who can make you turn to stone by touching you (nonsense, of course). But when you ignore the tour guy, the rest of your stay at the Shanghai Mansion will be great!

As soon as we arrived, an employee met us at our taxi (after midnight) and took our bags inside. Then, he brought us tea and cold towels while he checked us in. The room was spacious and beautiful, with a huge bed and bathtub. Plus, mini bar snacks and drinks were complimentary (no alcohol). Overall, an excellent hotel with superior service.

“Excellent hotel, modern, updated, clean, and excellent location”

I stayed here from July 20th, 2013 to July 29th, 2013, and I couldn't have been happier with my stay.

Pros: Great value for your money, modern/updated rooms, extremely friendly and English speaking staff, a mini bar re-stocked daily with complimentary goods (every day we got one sprite, one coke, two bottled waters, two packs of Oreos, and two bags of chips), the hotel's restaurant Cotton is excellent and reasonably priced (it was around $20-$25 total for two adults for lunch), and the location is fantastic! You are right in the heart of Chinatown with literally hundreds of food vendors right outside your door.

Make sure to go to the 2nd floor and take take photos of the coy pond, it is simply beautiful! And on the 2nd floor right outside of Cotton, the hotel has a cute little dressing room, with authentic tradition Chinese clothing that you can try on and take photos in. It was a unique factor that made this hotel every more charming. Don't hesitate to book this hotel!

As a satisfied customer of Shanghai Mansion Hotel in Bangkok, I would like to express my endless gratitude for services provided by the hotel. I've stayed in the hotel in the room 519 for three nights from 20th to 23rd of July with my wife as a part of our honeymoon trip to Thailand . We were both utterly charmed by the design of the hotel, its location and last but not least by every single member of the staff from bellboy, who assisted us for the room to bartender in delightful Cotton. Everyone was very courteous and helpful. I have to say that we couldn't find better place to spend this very important part of our life. Now, as I have finally returned to Poland I can recall all those great moments that I have experienced thanks to Shanghai Mansion Hotel and as I do so, I can assure You that I will recommend the hotel to every single person of whom I will know that he or she is planning a trip to Thailand.

“Great value”

We stayed the night in Bangkok for one night in the way to Koh Samui. The staff were really friendly and most of them were able to speak English. We stayed in the cheapest room and it was nice, not perfect but for the price it was really good. The location is close to the main train station and you are in the middle of china town! Despite that it was really quiet in our room compared to all the use outside. We ordered room service and the pad Thai was yummy! We felt safe and the rooms were clean, for a short visit it was great.

“Happy for Choosing this Hotel”

Staying in this bangkok hotel was a good choice for me. Check in was a breeze. They offered tea and cold towel upon arrival. S was especially helpful and attentive. The hotel has a beautiful chinese decor both in the room and the hallways. Rooms are tidied everyday and towels changed. There is complimentary soda, chips and cookies too. A great treat! Hot and cold shower, toiletries all provided. Wifi in the room was not very fast but good enough. The bed was huge and comfy and I had a good sleep for 4 nights! A real treat after a not so comfy stay in kathmandu. There was even a safe to keep valuables. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast at the Cotton Resto in the third floor. Outside of the hotel are street foods on both sides at night. Youll never go hungry. No complimentary airport transfer. Taxi fare to airport is 500 baht. Tuktuk service to grand palace and MBK shopping is for free but must be booked the day prior. I think the Day Tours Desk in the hotel lobby charge overprice. All in all I would recommend staying in this hotel.

“A highlight of Bangkok!”

Read about this place on a bangkok page otherwise we would never have found it. What a gem in the fabulous China town. I knew it was going to be a great experience when the darling Thai lady at the front warmly greeted us & grabbed my 5 yr old daughters hand & led us upstairs. What stunning decor, colonial jade green walls, red lanterns. Just so lush, I wish we had known about it to stay there, such a lovely boutique hotel. Cocktail 160bht, great list, pack a punch. They took a while to come I guess but the atmosphere was so lovely it wasn't a bother. Food was super quick to arrive & so superb! Recommend prawn salad which was unusual with the fruit & dressing but worked so well. Also the sweet and sour pork was great. The staff were so warm and they hailed a taxi for us in the rain on the crazy busy street. Would love to come here again!

“The Shanghai Mansion epitomizes the warmth, culture, and life of Thailand”

The hotel is located in the heart of Chinatown where life bubbles over onto the street. The decadence of the rooms far exceed the price. A top notch staff serves your every need be it meals, rides, plane tickets, or inside avenues to see how everyday people Thai live on a dime. The hotel manager Nuay (or as I call him Mr. Smiles) represents the warmth of the Thai people.

My wallet fell out in the lobby couch and I woke up the next morning with a lovely note, my wallet belongings fully intact, and a complimentary breakfast. Sure the petty crime stories exist anywhere in the world where people have less than the 1st world, but my experience at the Shanghai Mansion has thrown all cautionary tales I've heard to the wind. Nuay has a team of people who will never meet you without a smile or do anything within their power to ensure your time in Bangkok is everything you want.

"amazing place"

probably not being from Asia this hotel strike me even more. but i loved it. the style, the details, a pretty different option, friendly staff, extremely big room, amazing decoration that makes you feel in a different place and era. i really enjoyed my stay. only two things i didn't like: i didn't have opportunity to try the food (i wish i had), and i wish i had stayed longer than 2 nights. if i had to think about any watch out, the only one could be that it is not convenient if you come for shopping or to the nicest areas of the city. but i had a few days at siam square area a week earlier to compensate that, so this experience at chinatown and this hotel was a wonderful twist to end the vacation on a different note. how often do you find a hotel you, your wife and your teen son all love?

"Hidden Paradise"

We stayed in this hotel at the start of a 4 week trip across Asia, so chose luxury to start us off and it put our holiday off to a great start. We arrived at 6am and were collected from the airport, when arriving we were given tea and damp towel and we able to check in shortly after. The room was amazing, huge beds, shower room, seperate toilet and huge bathtub. The layout isn't the same as a traditional hotel, there are a few rooms on each floor and there is seating outside and a water feature on the ground floor. The mini bar was free and has a TV and DVD player available. The hotel has complimentary tuk tuks to the palace and the MBK mall which we used for the palace. Location is great for Chinatown, right in the middle of the streets and so close to the markets - it's great to come off a busy, hot street into the calmness of the hotel. To get to the palace you need to get the tuk tuk there and probably a taxi back, I'm not sure how long the walk would be, the restaurants around the area are unsurprisingly thai/chinese so if looking for a more western menu you need to go further out. All in all though the hotel is excellent, rooms are great, bed was so comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definately stay here again. Read less

Stayed at Shanghai Mansion from July 5 to 9, 2013. The rooms were very clean, although bed was a bit hard, the service excellent and staff very friendly and helpful. It is in the middle of China town so there is lots to do and see. I would definetly recommend this hotel to others.

“Excellent place to stay”

We went for honeymoon and they didn't disappoint us, what a lovely place to stay. The staff were all friendly and helpful, conversation was in english so no problem. Plus, the hotel is very detail in little things that surprise us. Location wise, it's 10-15 mins from the Hua Lampong station, and they do provide free tuk-tuk shuttle to the station. At the end of the right corner, there's the famous T&K seafood restaurant, a must try! cheap and good.

I saw Shanghai Mansion on Agoda and a host of others reviews. It was the nice atmosphere inside the hotel that made me choose Shanghai Mansion over the other hotels.

Check-in was fast and i was allowed in although i arrived very much earlier and i'm grateful of that. Front Office staff all were good.

We are very pleased with Shanghai Mansion and we hope that you can keep up the good work and we will return again.

Lovely oriental hotel
Lovely design, attentive staff, details to little things

Shanghai Mansion was by far the best hotel we have stay so far, not only in Bangkok, but across all the countries we have been. Which hotel provide an umbrella in your room for your use if it's raining outside? This one does. All the staff we met were so friendly, communication was never a problem. Location wise, it's 10-15 mins walk to Hua Lampong station, close by the Golden Buddha temple (Wat Traimit), and more importantly if you purposely stay in Yaowarat was the food, the seafood was so great! Look for the small restaurant named T&K Seafood at the right corner outside of this hotel block, their seafood was cheap and good.

“We loved this hotel!”

My friend and I spent our first 3 nights at this hotel on our first trip overseas. It was easy to find and was in the very interesting china town in Bangkok! The staff were lovely and super friendly and hotel itself is beautiful! We met another Australian lady staying there who said she has been coming here for years. The breakfast was excellent and the rooms were very clean. Defiantly not your typical modern, white & crisp Hilton type hotel, but it has a lot more character then anything like that. We spent about 1/2 an hour just looking around the hotel taking pictures. We would stay there again without any hesitation!

“Great place to stay; lots of character.”

Me and my husband stayed in this place in May 2013 for 3 nights. We got the cheapest room, but it was still very nice. The place is just beautifully decorated and it made us feel like we are in a really exotic place (we are from the U.S.). The restaurant at the hotel was very good and very reasonably priced. We searched the neighborhood for a good place to eat but we always ended up at this little restaurant. Breakfast was a buffet style with lots of options. Location of the hotel was also great. Although public transportation is not available anywhere close by it was still very easy to move around. We used tuk tuk service and ended paying no more 150-200 bath wherever we went. We used free tuk tuk service offered by the hotel as well. Hotel is also a walking distance (around 10 blocks) from the marina where you can pick up a shuttle boat for about 20 bath to go downtown (Advice: use local boat vs tourist boat - the only difference is that on the tourist boat the announcements are in English, but the price is few times higher; however if you just follow the stop map you shouldn't have any problems getting to where you're going to) . Although the hotel is placed in the heart of Chinatown, which is absolutely crazy busy, the hotel itself was quiet and you couldn't really hear much noises from outside.

“Advice: if you can afford stay at their suites/more expensive rooms - we took a snick pic and they were absolutely beautiful.” (Veronica2010)

Nice oriental design, friendly staffs, good restaurants nearby

Had very good experience staying in shanghai mansion. My friend and I love their oriental shanghai design so much and took hell lot of pics with it. The staffs are friendly but need to search for certain bellboy who can converse in fluent english. Located in the heart of Chinatown Bangkok, nearby to 7-11 and various awesome restaurants. Definitely will come back again!

“Old style Bangkok charm, pet fish option a lovely touch”

I stayed here a night based on the excellent review I'd read. The Shanghai Mansion is a beautifully styled boutique hotel, very clean and comfortable with lots of quirky touches to make your Bangkok stay special and memorable without needing to pay big bucks.
The welcome and check out we're very fast and friendly, they even seem to rate the staff on this and take it very seriously. The rooms were clean and done up in a wonderful 'Oriental shabby chique' with colourful fabric lanterns in every corner, ornate 4 poster bed, black and red resin wash basin, some nice touches like silk guest robes and slippers and lovely coconut spa bathroom products. My favourite touches were the ornate decorative bird cage in the bathroom and the very interesting option to have one of their beautiful fish as a pet in bowl your room for your stay.

Definitely a memorable and surprisingly tranquil stay, given the location directly in the heart of China Town district.

SHANGHAI MANSION, Thailand

exotic decor, music, and great value.
nothing was problem.
Chinatown near river.
Shanghai Mansions is in great location in Chinatown near grand river Chao Phraya so we could use river boats for fast travel around to temples malls palaces and shops. Gorgeous decor in 1920's Shanghai theme with chinoiserie furnishings with a touch of Suzi Wong. Staff and service lovely. Great value for very affordable price , even our basic Mei Hua room, which was quite exotically furnished. Good air con adjustable in each room and non smoking. 4 storey ' genteel' boutique hotel offering beautiful relaxed environs after our adventures all day. Upstairs Cotton Club jazz swing combo and cocktails makes the whole experience like being in a vintage movie and you want to dress the part. No plastics chain hotel. No pool beauty salons and souvenir shops. Highly recommended.

Beautiful styling and excellent service

Styling and friendly service
Middle of china town
Beautifully styled boutique hotel - bringing out the best in tasteful and interesting room decoration. If you like 'shabby chique' style decorating, you'll live this asian twist on the theme. Quirky touches like old Chinese style 4 poster beds, bird cage hanging in the bathroom, colourful lanterns, silk robes and slippers - you can even request to have a live fish in a bowl as a pet during your stay. All the comforts without the price tag. Very friendly and fast service.

"Unbelievable -It just doesn't get better than this"

The room was really amazing. Top quality fittings and finishes, modern, clean. The staff were incredibly professional, very friendly and helpful. The design of the hotel was so peaceful and a real haven from the chaotic streets of Chine Town. The breakfast was excellent - a nice mix between west and east. They offered a free tuk tuk ride to grand palace, MBK shopping mall and one other place I can’t remember which, was a nice touch. In terms of location, you really are in the middle of China Town with an excellent night market. Also it is close to all the major tourist destinations. The only issue with Shanghai was that the Taxi driver had no idea how to get there and the number printed on email I received was wrong. Be sure to have direction in Thai. Other than that, this is an absolute must stay in Bangkok. Seriously, you can’t go wrong.

"Nice interiors"

I just stayed for one day at Shanghai Mansion. Definetly wanted to spend one more day there. The hotel looks in bad shape from the road, but once you enter the ambience is really nice. It looked like a romantic place. The room was really clean and tidy. My room was quite spacious. The staff was very cordial. I would love to stay there at my next trip.

“Nice”

My friend and I spent 6nights at this nice and cosy hotel following good reviews form trip advisor and we really enjoyed it though the hotel is quiet far from the city main centre specially in peak hours by taxi the easiest way is to catch a tuk tuk or taxi to go at the MRT station 10mins (underground) and from there straight to main city centre. Good street food next to the hotel during weekend.

Room Tip: We book a suite as the other rooms are quite small. No windows but we were not bothered.

“SHANGHAI MANSIONS Hotel - 1st timers in Bangkok and the Chao Phraya river.”

InitiaI misgivings about Bangkok & hotel in the first hours, and 160 km expresway ride late at night form airport , and because BKK is too much of everything for first timer ( me ). But mercifully I endured & was won over by this relaxed, friendly staffed 4 storey, 1920's chinoiserie themed hotel - & its location. Shanghai Mansion is a small funky and stylishly ambient & cool oasis in the middle of Chinatown. Being within easy walking to the great Chao Phraya river - ( I'm not fit or younger and was OK ) - with its cooling river breezes, exotic water traffic & sights, really added to the value-filled hotel. There are no pools, gym or multiple choice eateries, spas or beauty shops etc here. This is small boutique and for us " less is more " as beginners to the this tropic megapolis. We chose not to be in the immediate frenetic CBD type area as it was easy to get in and out as we needed. I was a slow starter but got more courageous with practice getting out and about . We kept hotel cards with maps and instructions to give taxis or tuk tuks if we got lost or didn't know where we were. We decided tuk tuk or taxi prices are so low that we didn't sweat paying a bit more (that amounted to four dollars AUD) or being asked and agreeing to sidetrack to a shop for the tuk tuk driver to get a kick back. No-one makes you buy anything at the places and we liked the odd sidetracks. They were an additional view of what goes on in BKK and not sleazy or scary . Similarly when we repeated " no thanks " politely, we just waited for another taxi or tuk tuk if our request was not accepted. The metered taxis (that agree to use meter) are more straight forward. it is all good natured and polite and we realised that sometimes it wasnt not worth costly gas and effort in the one way heavy traffic to do short small trips for next to nothing.
When things are this cheap side tracks for a kick back and also tipping becomes a needed source of income so as uncomfortable as we felt we tipped and more so for those doing more menial work, at the hotel, or solo operators & tiny food stalls we ate our evening meals at.

Back on Yaowarat Rd at Shanghai Mansions, in Chinatown, when heading for the river, don't fear the labyrinthine alleys and aisles on walks between hotel & river tightly squeezed with shops businesses & stalls selling bags clothes food and everything. Do mind out for the scooters even where they shouldn't seem to fit. Crossing the larger streets is an exercise in trust, so keep moving confidently or piggy back onto a group of locals when they cross..if not, someone eventually comes along to help you cross. The BKK traffic is incredibly well behaved and unselfish so despite volume everything flows with very deft, mindfulness . ...they really are amazing drivers! Dogs and helmet-less kids just balancing on backs of scooters in terrifying traffic were graceful and almost acrobatic. I couldn't look. My partner liked to to sit on the open air terrace of the hotel lobby and watch the fabulous street life & traffic convolutions with a Singha beer, or tea, chatting, while I took afternoon naps to recoup.

We spent ages hunting " real " coffee in BKK. The hotel has a serious espresso machine planned as renovation was underway while we stayed, but there was no noise or disruption to us at all, and no real espresso coffee or barista yet.

Good service was a standard everywhere we went and didnt really vary between staff or workers as long as you are a courteous customer also.
Front of house hotel staff always asked if we wanted to take a tour as we passed them to go out, and they good naturedly ( though bemusedly)) accepted our preference to walk, or use train to go out of town to Ayutthaya ruins, or to use the public river boats or metered taxis to the City centre for Siam Square and Paragon or MBK shops etc. There are dogs and stumpy tail cats everywhere and I fretted often.

The river clearly became our favourite sight and means of travel in BKK - it is fast, cooling, and cheap to use by buying tickets as you go, or buy a day-pass at the Central Pier, so you can hop on and off all day at all sorts of historic sites temples and palaces. It's often a quicker way sometimes to get to further off places than car taxis in bad traffic Then you can get a shorter ride in taxi or tuk to tuk for the inland part of the outing. Check maps or ask.

We had to do " air conditioning pit-stops " several times daily either on land and on river for me to manage the humidity. This led to finding quirky nice places and even real coffee. There was also a river dock that had "Black Canyon Cafe " upstairs above old boat sheds and markets which gave great river views with needed respite of chilly aircon, granita like watermelon or coffee frappes & then curries or snacks. Back to the dock below and deciding whether to take ferry crossing or blue flag tourist boat or orange 'locals' boats to the next sight. Boat prices vary accordingly but no fare is more than a pittance so don't fret or act mean. Its good to know your own currency equivalent of the Baht cost which always keeps things in perspective and about how embarassingly low the Thai wages are & that basic survival is a daily task here.
Back at the hotel our standard basic Mei Hua room was very affordable & exotically comfy with good working everything esp. cooling in the room. They have two lifts to all floors. From buzzing lobby to serenity of the spacious upstairs levels each with stylish polished concrete floors and elegantly decorated with large open areas and a balcony view of multi-storeyed atrium strung with glorious coloured chinese lanterns above the long fish pond below. All the meals and music bar / club happened at different times on the one floor in same room with pretty much same nice friendly staff throughout, so the place starts to feels personal and 'homey ' quickly. Breakfast starts here from 6.30 onwards with a basic buffet asian or western - or continental We liked congee and chopped century eggs then moved to bacon omelette and tomatoes Spoiled for choice if you try things ! The room changes menus for lunch and then dinner as a restaurant, [ but we ate out at stalls on the street every night] - it then converts to a good looking night club between 9- 11 pm with house jazz/swing combo (varying male or female singer +) sax, upright bass, and mellow guitar. They deliver soundtrack smooth & mellow vintage 50s / 60s sounds. ..It feels like being in a fifties or 60s movie, and makes you want to dress the part and drink stylish drinks to go with the sound and setting. The band are really very good musicians.. and the Cocktails were yummm! The Hotel's "Cotton Club" is a great antidote to the challenging city and day's activities outside.

Shanghai Mansions will suit all well-mannered folk, who can appreciate smaller calm courteous environs with real value & stylised decor. It catered to couples, singles, and families as well as groups, of all ages from everywhere while we were there. it seemed empty though quite fully booked but somehow never felt busy & we never noticed many people even at breakfast.
Try larger, more luxurious rooms with more to offer like their own internal atrium terrace, if you wish, but we were out so much we didn't need more and we slept very well being tired out , without any sounds or light intruding. Notably there are no external windows to see out, but it works, given the decor. Our basic room had an ambient coloured glass wall behind bed with curtains to allow diffused light in pretty colours from the atrium. Lights have to always be on when in the room but can vary down-lights as well as hanging lanterns or bedside light as need.

Think Suzy Wong movie- style to picture Shanghai Mansions.. and they say it will be more so when the lobby and the bar cafe/club/ restaurant get it's " more hip Shanghai 1960's " makeover. We're looking forward to seeing the new version.

Room Tip: 4 storey Boutique style. Air con in room 420 MeiHua basic room is audible because it is adjustable manually within each room and works well. Partner thought too cold but I didnt. We adapted and slept soundly due to rooms having no external windows or noise. In room 420 we barely heard anything for 7 days we were there even in hall outside.no smoking inside but can in lobby front. Our Mei Hua room was a very basic standard room. Other style rwere bigger and more in them but not much more to induce us to spend more as we were out all the time . Mei Hua has - as do all rooms - muted ambient lighting for the effect. Some may find it dark. Has coloured glass window wall with diffused light from internal atrium. No natural light at all but slept like log in dark and quiet. Mei Hua rooms have no no bath, only shower. Bathroom good for couple. Free Bar fridge snacks of two of chips; fizzy drinks; two bottles of water replenished daily. Fresh fruit platter at start was delicious - dragon fruit longans etc Yummy ! ( and safe to eat, so try them ). We asked for western size tea/ coffee cups as nice chinese tea only provided. Then we bought our own instant coffee and tea bags at local supermart and milk. Ironing board hairdryer all avail free. Bathrobes & slippers also. We bought buffet breakfast and ate it in restaurant club area when we wanted at 300 Baht each. The place and room was at it reads in the promos. just check if renos will be finished or if affecting upstairs at all when you stay as they do plan to alter restaurant. But they also don't want to affect their customer trade. We noted how well they managed both in June. Call and ask.” (AnnaNigel)

“Romantic and chic”

My husband and I spent 2 wonderful nights at this hotel. We stepped out of the taxi and were taken up to the reception by a very helpful man who works out front of this hotel. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and we were greeted at reception by lovely staff and served hot tea and given a cool flannel, just what we needed after a long trip from London. After a swift check-in we were taken to our room, which was a suite on the 3rd floor, bliss. The hotel is situated in Chinatown and surrounded by quirky shops and little alleyways which are great to explore. The hotel also arranged a free tuk tuk to take us to the Grand Palace and Temple. We ate in the hotel restaurant for dinner and had drinks and enjoyed the lovely musical tones of the resident Jazz band. All in all a great stay and a smooth check-out by the lovely Abi and Poy. The guys who work at the front of the hotel were great for flagging down taxis and negotiating a good price too. If you want to stay somewhere a little bit different and special then this is it, we loved it!

My go-to hotel in Bangkok!
Comfort, great staff, good value

My partner and I have stayed here several times, and it never fails to impress. As ever, the staff were fantastic, our room was wonderfully comfortable (best beds in any hotel we've ever stayed in, anywhere in the world!), and the jazz band playing in Cotton restaurant were as brilliant as ever! The dinner menu has changed since we were here in September, which is a shame because there are far fewer vegetarian/seafood options (but still plenty of meat for those who eat it!). The few dishes we *could* eat however, were delicious! Although there is currently building and improvement work going on in the hotel, it is not in any way intrusive, and staff go out of their way to make up for any inconvenience. We're looking forward to the renovations being finished - hopefully by the time we return later this year! One suggestion for improvement; please bring back the bubble bath! The toiletries provided are very good but last year there was bubble bath as well; this time I had to use shower gel in the bath, which really wasn't terribly good! :-)

“Chinatown does not make your stay any less Thai”

This was an excellent location from which we visited all the main attractions of Bangkok. Great decor and very friendly service.

The streets of Chinatown are a great experience by themselves, and we spent most mornings and late evenings getting lost on purpose in them, before and after touring some of the must-see's. We ignored the 'tourist information' in the lobby, if you turn left right out of the lobby and walk to the first intersection, you can get cheaper cabs and tuc-tucs than on the main street, but most of the time we just walked directly from the hotel, and some of our best experiences were just getting a little lost on the way.

The street food here is much cleaner than a lot of countries, but be careful of course. You do need to get used to flies and ants, they are everywhere. A plastic glove is dangerously reassuring, since they usually wear the same glove all day and also accept money with it, so it really does not help at all, so don't use that as your indicator of cleanliness.

You can walk to the river boats in less than 10 minutes, which will take you lots of good places really fast and cheap, and it's fun and nice with the wind in your face.

“What a great place”

We had the pleasure to stay at the Shanghai Mansion in Chinatown for 2 nights in June 2013 and must say that we loved the place. If you are expecting a 5 star hotel do not go there but if you are looking for a hotel with great atmosphere and friendly staff this is definitely the place to go. The suite is the best option if you want a little more space.
I would recommend this hotel without any hesitation.

A traditional theme hotel, value for money.
Staff, Quality service, Clea

Overall was good, the staffs are in good manners, service are good. I lost my gold bracelet at a massage place the night before and the driver of Shanghai Mansion offered to bring us back to the hotel and look for my bracelet without any extra charges. Although I didn't get back my bracelet but I do appreciate the service they offered to us. However the location of the hotel was a bit far from the BTS Station. I will recommend this hotel to my friends around as it is more like a theme hotel with traditional designs.

Great place to stay for a few days+explore Chinatown, the riverfront + all the crazy little alleyways!Lovely people, great service, great Shangai chic decor and overall a pleasant experience.Definately go for the suite. We tried the smaller room for 1st 2 nites+w/the canopy bed it was a little tight.Extended+Re-booked for a suite on the same floor as restaurant 3rd nite-spacious+awesome.Quite luxurious w/a nice patio area +incredible stairway and lantern lobby.3 days was perfect. If i had to find anything wrong-the breakfast got a little repetetive, maybe mix up the menu a little more? But came w/the room so still couldnt beat it! From the cold mint towel at check in to the pleasant staff and a doorman who took good care of us+a couple of great streetside meals-nice touchs+all around a great experience-will stay again! All the best MK PS-found the place to begin with on Tripadvisor!

Room Tip: We enjoyed the suite w/out the canopy bed-cant remember name!

“A beautiful Quirky Hotel.”

My friend and I stayed @ this hotel and from the moment we pulled up outside the service we recieved ws impecible. We were greeted with hot tea while we were checked in and our room was amazing, clean and beautifully decorated,There was a 3 piece band playing every evening we were there and the guy on the Soprano Sax was amazing and so cool. The cocktails were pretty good 2.The staff were friendly and very attentive and our room made up both days we were there. The hotel is very central for the Market @ Sampeng I would certainly recomend this Hotel and would return again and then I would get a chance to sample their menu which looked very good but we just ran out of time and didn't eat there but I am sure we would not have been disappointed.

“Great Hotel for a trip to Bangkok”

This was a surprisingly lovely hotel. We had booked it as an easy place to stay on our first arrival in Bangkok and it turned out to be one of the best places we stayed in the whole trip.
The decor is lovely - there is a large fish pond on the ground floor with beautiful lanterns all the way up to the top floor above it. Our room was huge, clean and again impeccably decorated. The restaurant at the hotel is reasonably priced and has excellent live jazz some nights.
The staff were really friendly and location wise we could walk to Hualomphong in 5 mins to catch our early morning train out of Bangkok. At the same time it was really easy to get around the city sites (recommend using the water taxis!)
And the best bit for me, if the city had got too much and you enjoyed looking at the fish in the lobby you can ask for a bowl of fish to be brought to your room, for your personal contemplation - Amazing!

“Loved it!”

My friend and I only stayed one here for the night but I purposely chose it for it decor. The hotel was quite hard to find amidst the bustle of chinatown, especially as there were roadworks taking place near the Hualamphong metro station which meant we ended up walking the long way round!. So best get a good map or good instructions first! Anyway the hotel was lovely and the Chinese theme was kept throughout the restaurant, the only thing I would add is that the rooms (the one that I stayed in) didn't have windows so it can be a bit dark in there....not a problem for me usually as I don't tend to stay too long in the room. Can't fault the hotel and the service was great, staff were friendly and polite and they were happy for us to have a late check-out. Would definitely go back and also chinatown is buzzing in the evening with lots of foodstalls to try.

The decor was amazing. The staff were friendly and obliging. They allowed us to check in early and also to leave our luggage there after checkout until we could catch a train that evening. A slight hiccup about the booking was quickly rectified and was not the fault of the hotel.

Chinatown is quite busy and dirty and Bangkok is a little hard to navigate within but we were able to find our way to and from the train station eventually and found it was a very short walk. Bangkok is not really our kind of place to visit but the hotel was lovely.

“Quality stay”

Overall this place was surprisingly pretty good. We pulled up late after a long flight and at night the street and lobby were not appealing. Check in was quick and we were taken down a long hallway. We entered the elevator and from there on everything was great. It's a beautiful hotel on the inside. Lots of small intimate details I would have never expected. Our room was a good size, very clean, stylish, and from what I could tell fairly new. Shower size was good. We stated in a studio on 5th floor. There was no window but who comes to Bangkok and looks through the window. I would definitely look into the 2 & 3 floor rooms as they seemed to be the nicer floors.

Location was great. Street was great during the day. Good street vendors for food. Staff was very nice an helpful.
I don't think you can get better for the price.

“lovely oasis hotel”

lovely hotel, beautifully decorated and laid out, and great location in the heart of chinatown, perfect for wandering the streets and exploring the area. A free taxi to the Grand Palace was randomly thrown into the deal which was a nice perk.
Persistence of the tour guide on the doorstep was mildly annoying, on the other hand he was the source of a free excellent city map

“perfect hotel”

I can recommend this hotel unique athmosphere, good service, clear, really good staff especially Jina, Aib and Rit, thaks a lot ;) Jina is really helpful person and small all time.... I like the style of this hotel I felt like in Shanghai... very big bed, oriental style. If you choose the place to stay in bangkok choose this one... This place is in the city center of China town square... it's really fun place, is cheap in the city center.

The bar has music regilarly in the evenings. And being smack-bang in the middle of Chinatown, it's really fun and easy to walk into the evening bustle. We'll definitely return, thank you!

“Perfect retreat in a mad city!”

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here after 2 weeks traveling around Thailand, we decided that we wanted a bit of luxury at the end of the holiday. This was a lovely hotel! The room was very nice we chose to stay in one of the suits which was great. masive room and bathroom with a huge free standing bath (perfect as i love a bath and only had showers for the last 2 weeks!).
The area was good for getting around China town has its own market (which is cheaper than the night market at patpong). However you need to be very careful of the friendly Thai people around the hotel who are actually working for teh "fashion houses"!!!!
We were caught out a few times getting in to Tuk Tuks thinking we were going one place and then being taken past a suit maker on the way! You will get used to them and you just need to tell them from the start that you are not interested and that you have already brought a suit! They try and get you everywhere even when we were dropped outside the Grand palace we were approached by a man that was trying to tell us that it was closed for lunch and that we should take a Tuk Tuk somewhere else! This is because they never drop you directly outside they will alwasy take you a 2 min walk away! You will get used to it and you can just tell them thank you but you know where you are going and they move on.
This of course has nothing to do with the hotel but is a great help when you get there! The people on the tuk tuks also try to take you out of China town (i guess they dont like it!) But there are things to do like the market and you can also take the boat just down the road to the reclining buddah and the grand palace for 15 THB a person which is a great experience for about 40p.
Just make sure if you want an early check in / late check out you book it before you arrive as they charge you a lot more once you are there!

Great location/people would highly reccomend!

Room Tip: Get a suite! Not much more and well worth it

“for a different experience of Bangkok”

I was looking for something different in this city of modern soulless hotels. Shanghai Mansion was a lovely surprise, even after seeing many photos of the place. It has been beautifully decorated and furnished and has a wonderful old Asian ambience. The room, though very small, was filled with lovely detail, colour and pattern. I loved the birdcage in the bathroom and the old red saloon style doors, dark wood four poster bed and coloured glass window panes. the restaurant was average but three are so many places to eat in Chinatown that this wasn't a problem for me. Walking the streets at night is a lively colourful experience and the fresh pomegranate juice is amazing. The covered street markets are jam packed with all sorts of things but especially good for textiles and trimmings. It's not a great location if you want to go anywhere outside of Chinatown as the road is constantly jammed and the train station is a long walk away. Still, it is a very different experience to the rest of Bangkok.

This is my second time stayed with Shanghai Mansion .

Stayed once earlier in our trip and enjoyed it so much we came back. Normally stay at Lebua when in Bangkok but wanted to try Chinatown and we're glad we did!

Once checked in, All staff during our visits were excellent.

Ate in the restaurant twice during our visit and food and service was great both times. It's a pity the restaurant isn't busier as the band seemed a bit wasted on an empty room.

Rooms were immaculately clean and tidy. Dined at Cotton Restaurant twice, food and service were brilliant.

Really enjoyed our stay and have already reviewed online and recommended to friends. We will definitely stay again.

“Calm in Caos”

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and wow!! The staff are so helpful, and attentive. The hotel itself is beautiful and calm, you forget about the caos that is china town. The room was gorgeous, with complimentary mini bar, cofy beds, silk robes and slippers, great powered shower. Breakfast is available, with a large selection which sets you up for the day. The Bar in the hotel has a jazz band most nights, I would definitely recommend people to listen, They were great. Lovely to have a cocktail and tap your toe to some Jazz in the evening

This is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle, heat and noise from Chinatown. Furnishings are very cool, rooms are funky. Close to great eating spots and the visuals that make Chinatown. We didn't eat as we were only on an overnight stop, but the front could use some work.

“Never disappointed.”

I have stayed in this hotel regularly over the past 6-7 years & have never been disappointed.
The decor have never worn off on me & I'm always delighted to be back.
The service has been consistently friendly & helpful.

The location is not a problem for me - it's only an 800m walk to the main MRT (subway) station Hua Lamphong. I actually like being on the main road (Yaowarat) for the many food stalls at night.

Not having windows, gym, pool & spa are obvious shortcomings but for the rates being charged, I cannot think of a better deal in Bangkok!

“Great personal hotel in Chinatown”

When we arrived hot and tired we were welcomed gently with smiles, a sit down, cold towels and tea. So friendly. The hotel is lovely, small enough to be personal (about 70 rooms) and large enough to be professional. Room service was instant! Lovely decor and art appropriate to Chinatown. A first rate boutique hotel underlined by the close attention from all the staff.

we have been on a business trip, our motto was to explore Bangkok other than normal trip, so looking for a place in china town, but cozy. The hotel shanghai mansion was a good choice having friendly staff but rooms were not lighted properly, probably Chinese culture. No windows or natural light source in the room. Food was normal, but difficult for a pure veggi.

“Chinese boutique in a great part of town”

We absolutely loved staying in Chinatown and definitely in Shanghai Mansion. Crisp, stylish and friendly staff. This was out first place to stay in having just arrived in Bangkok / Thailand for the first time. We like to stay somewhere decent having just arrived somewhere new after a long flight and this was exaclty what we had in mind. The rooms were nice, all extras there and in a good location in Chinatown.

Breakfast was .. Ok. Enough variety and of course a fresh baked omelet the way you like it. But at the same time we weren't "blown away" by it as was the case in some other places we'd stayed in. If your looking to visit all the tourist's highlightes, note that with all the crazy traffic in Bangkok you'll be spending a good bit of time in traffic (which is why you mit prefer airconditioned taxis over open tuk-tuks after a tuk-tuk ride or two)

This was a first stop as it was a bit far out for what we wanted to do that was more centrally, (hospital visit etc).. Overall it was fine. I like the ambience of the place, (peaceful and relaxing) (inside not our!). Everything needed for visitors was available. The food was okay and th estaff pleasent enough. Taxis were quite easy to obtain although you might need the assistance of the porter to get one for you.

“Happines Away From The Madding Crowds”

We have not yet been here a day but are loving our stay here. Kitschy decor that has an exotic flair to it, good food (the breakfast buffet and a la carte dinner), an awesome live jazz band at the restaurant this evening and friendly staff to top it all. After having spent many trips staying in the very touristy parts of Bangkok, it's so lovely to be in a part of the city which has such a different appeal and history. The streets are crowded in the evening but it's not a jostling, mad crowd. The hotel is very conveniently located with loads of street food, restaurants and convenience stores closeby and the subway is just a 7-10 minute walk away. This will be my destination when I come back to Bangkok

“Wonderful tranquility in china town”

Last port of call on our island hopping trip, I stayed here 4 years ago and its still as wonderful, rooms are beautiful drinks and snacks in the mini bar are free of charge and its so peaceful. We were only here for 1 night and the only problems we inccurred wrere nothing to do with the hotel itself, in hindsight it would probably made sense for us to have stayed in a different area as we had quite a lot of things to cram into our last night and the hotel is not close to a skytrain station or a money exchange. If you are in Bangkok for more time I would highly recommend this hotel as it is fabulous with wonderful staff

Room Tip: They are all amazing

Great place to stay to explore China Town from
Service, decor, breakfast

I enjoyed our stay at Shanghai Mansion. My wife loved the decor, where I was not so fussed by it, However, it was all as it is promoted to be and the staff were very obliging and courteous. Location is good from where to explore china town and a short walk to the Train station and underground. We had two rooms one the basic one for our son and we had the next price one up. Definitely worth the extra for the larger room.

“Sexy and alluring”

Pictures don't do justice to this charming and alluring hotel in the heart of Chinatown. The hotel unfolds itself beautifully like the blooming of a flower with well-thought details from the lobby all the way to the bedroom. Every nook and turn is a surprise and it keeps you wanting to unfold its secrets. I regretted staying here with my girlfriend here only for a night as it was such a memorable experience!

Usually the location would be a huge consideration for me as there was no train services or airport links nearby and it was about 20 mins ride away from the city centre. But the hotel made up the shortfall by offering free tuk-tuk services to guests at designated timings. What was missing was also an indoor pool to indulge in the beautiful ambience.

Breakfast buffet was superb with its delectable and authentic spreads. Guest officers were also warm and welcoming, ready to answer queries and to engage in casual conversations. Thank you for this memorable, beautiful experience

“Lovely hotel in Chinatown”

This is a wonderful hidden gem in Bangkok. It is in Chinatown which is a lively neighborhood with so much choice for dining (mostly on the street but the quality is so good it hardly matters).

When you arrive at the hotel you don't know what to expect. The entrance with a small bar area seems out of place as does the escalator. However, when you take the escalator up to the lobby area you are immediately immersed in serenity. A cold cloth and a refreshing drink are a wonderful touch.

After the check in procedure you are taken to your room and this is the first view you have of the tasteful atrium and lighting.

On arriving in your room it is a mix of trendy and traditional. A wooden four poster bed, lacquered closets but a modern sink and bathroom. The bed is comfortable nice linens and pillows. The shower is hot and the towels fluffy. There is drinking water provided and free snacks in the fridge which is a nice touch. The air conditioning works well and is not overly noisy.

Breakfast is a mix of Asian and western food and of good quality. It is buffet style and was included in our room rate. The bar on the ground floor is a nice place to have a cold beer after a long day sight-seeing.

All the staff is very friendly and helpful. They truly know what the word "service" means here.

If you are looking for something that is not a big hotel in the central business district of Bangkok the Shanghai Mansion is a wonderful alternative

There is a bar at the front of the hotel with open windows looking onto the street there that was not open when we got there. So we asked if we could buy our own beer from 7=11 and sit there, and they said sure. Others started doing it too and by the time we left the bar was open and lively!

The restaurant in the hotel is good. The food is good, the prices are reasonable for Bangkok, and the atmosphere is quiet. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was very good especially for a freebee. Dinner that we paid for there was very good too. We ate at some of the street restaurants nearby too, and what a contrast! The street places were on a lane of the street that cars drove on in gridlock during the day but were were converted into restaurants at night. The food was great, the prices were reasonable, the traffic 4 meters away was grid lock, What an experience! Thank god they do not honk horns in Bangkok like they do in Katmando.

The hotel is in Chinatown and Chinatown is really crowded, so if you want a quiet street scene stay in the backpacker area just north of the Palace. I stayed there about 5 years ago and there are about 30% of the people there.

But if you want to experience a busy part of Bangkok, and we really enjoyed it, the Shanghai Mansion is a great place.

Romantic hotel in the heart of Chinatown
Nostalgic, deeply charming, surprising

Fabulous design, comfortable room, great staff

It was a wonderful place to spend a couple nights. About the only downside is that Chinatown is difficult to get to from the BKK airport. But the buffet was great for breakfast, and the restaurant was great any time of day. The room was exquisitely designed and very comfortable.

"very nice”

the rooms are all nice. I've been there 3 times now and was always happy. the staff doesn't speak English well but they try. security guards are very funny and polite. it was very relaxing to sit in the bar downstairs even when it was closed already, grab a beer from the 7/11 and just watch the street life. the location is perfect for bangkok. it's definitely the best place to stay. many good restaurants on the streets. just sit down where many Asians eat.

All Cotton the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We were impressed by the bell staff and the security guard who went beyond a level of service that we were expecting.

The free minibar is a lovely touch. Enjoyed breakfast buffet with nice variety. Our room was very well maintained, the air-conditioning worked very well and we had plenty of hot water. The Dutch channel on the TV is a nice touch.

Nice finger food with our beer at Shanghai Terrace. Actually I would say very satisfied. This is an excellent hotel and I would recommend it to anyone going to Bangkok.

The room was very nice, completely made us forget about the noisy and crowded streets below. Would recommend this to future fellow travelers vacationing with girlfriend or wife

“Brilliant Location and Friendly Staff”

Lovely hotel with great staff. Really nice surroundings with unique rooms and great breakfast.
Hotel staff were very helpful and after a long flight from the UK it was nice to be welcomed with a cold towel and drink.

The hotel is in a busy area but that is common in Bangkok, we didn't hear any street noise from our room. The beds are quite high, in keeping with the style of the oriental theme but comfortable.

“Shanghai and New Orleans meet in Bangkok”

It may look like just another hotel in China Town Bangkok but by entering the lobby where Ying, Jina or Poy help you with nearly everything the journey into an other world begins. The floors and rooms are decorated with Chinese style lamps, the doors are typical, too. My room was quite spacious and - despite the light door - very quite.

I enjoyed the breakfast and especially the fabulous dim sum very much. Another nice feature was the free mini bar including water, beverages and cookies.

AND... If Bangkok does nor offer enough nightlife for you there is always the cotton club, located in the third floor of the hotel with nice live Jazz just like in New Orleans.

Great!

Calm, serene and beautiful hotel in crazy Chinatown!
On the main road in Chinatown, close to the bustling markets and the Golden Buddha
I had a wonderful stay at the Shanghai Mansion and can't wait to go back again soon! It was completely without fault; well situated, easy to find, stunning decor and staff who went out of their way to help me out. The breakfast was delicious with a good selection of both Eastern and Western food. This will definitely be my go to hotel for future trips to Bangkok.

“Nicest hotel I have ever stayed in!!”

We booked two nights here in June 2011 and ended up staying for ten, we absolutely loved it.
The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly from the moment we arrived.
The room we stayed in was absolutely amazing, really spacious with the biggest bed I have ever seen.
We had a chaise longue with Flat screen TV and DVD player, the amazing bed, a massive free stabding bath and huge shower room.
The free mini bar was stocked up every day and we had the most relaxing amazing time staying here - it was absolutely perfect after you've spent 12 hours exploring Bangkok!

There is also a free limited Tuk-tuk service to MBK and other areas but we tended to just walk 10 minutes the metro or 15 minutes in the other direction to the river taxi.

The jazz bar was a really nice place to sit and have a drink and the musicians we saw were really good.

I really can't praise this place highly enough, the only downside to our room was it didn't have any windows but given it is on the main drag through China town you don't really want any windows in this area!
Next time I go back to Bangkok I will stay here again without a doubt and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone - luxury like this would be four times the price in most other countries - at least!

Stayed here before and it never fails to impress. Beautiful hotel and luscious rooms. ChinaTown a buzz of activity but pretty grimy (in an endearing sort of way). Beware the dodgy Tuk-Tuk drivers hanging around outside. I asked to be taken to a night market but ended up being taken to a PingPong bar in his Dad's garage. Oh well...when in Rome...

“Stunning small hotel.”

I stayed here for two nights in march. The hotel is in the middle of the Chinatown district of Bangkok. Which made it a perfect stop from which to explore, especially in the evenings with the many pavement food stalls selling their delicious wares. I booked into a mu LAN suite which was enormous. I don't think I have had a bigger bath tub in any other hotel in the world. The staff were attentive. The room clean with a free mini bar and breakfast was good. All this and the price was great. Will stay again.

“The most magnificent oasis we have ever encountered!!”

Our family of 7 was travelling in luxury. 5 star cruise ship, 5 star tour guides, and a number of 5 star+ hotels during our three week vacation.

The Shanghai Mansion boutique hotel in ChinaTown, Bangkok was without a doubt the most startlingly beautiful, luxurious, comfortable and just plain pampering of them all.

An absolute highlight of our trip, from the moment we ascended the escalator to the 1st floor lobby, the Shanghai Mansion did not fail in any way to impress.

The service was exemplary. The rooms were massive, and featured every luxury you could hope for. The beds were huge, the baths deep and very quick to fill. Complimentary mini bar was a nice touch (no alcohol), and the gorgeous lounge areas scattered outside the wood paneled doors of the private rooms were just lovely.

The food, both dinner and breakfast (we didn't want to leave the hotel to eat elsewhere!!) was wonderful, and I definitely recommend a meal at Cotton Restaurant if you are staying here.

If we hadn't needed to catch our cruise ship, I would very very happily have extended our stay in Bangkok purely so that we could have enjoyed another night at the Shanghai Mansion. I truly cannot rave enough about it.

Obviously... very highly recommended!

oasis
location, aesthetic appeal, comfort

Fabulous! Situated on the first block of Bangkok's busy Chinatown, the hotel is literally next door to the delicious riot of street food that is the focus of many foodie-tours in Bangkok. Also within easy range (a quick taxi or tuk-tuk ride, but a bit far to walk in the heat) of many of the major temples. The hotel itself is a quiet, cool, beautiful respite from the steamy chaos outside. A good place to recharge and relax in the library or by the indoor fish pond, between forays into the city. The dim sum breakfast and the nightly jazz are both delightful. The decor of the hotel is the most enchanting thing, among the many comforts.

Downtown chinatown.
1. Outside the hotel the chaos of Chinatown, restaurants, shops and the noise... 2. The silence in the hotel, helpful staff. 3. The combination of both 1 and 2

The third time I've stayed at shanghai mansion, it's has become my first choice when visiting Bangkok, not near sky train or the underground system, but the staff will make sure you get a taxi with a meter. I live in Thailand and Chinatown is a nice break from Thai food. Only a short walk to indiatown with many Indian restaurants, I am looking forward to my next visit.

Cotton Club restaurant in the hotel is good and well priced if you don't want to venture out.

We were so delighted with our stay at this hotel.
Is such a lovely oasis of calm in a very noisy and busy city.
Our ground floor room was spacious, exquisitely furnished and welcoming every time we returned.
The staff are amazingly polite and cater to every whim.
Fantastic included breakfast, free wifi and mini bar.
We dined in (room service) one day and it was great and had pre dinner drinks in the bar every night.
The hotel is in the best spot to dine out with any number of great places to eat right along the street.
With fabulous boutique places like this we never want to stay in a big city hotel again.
Could not fault it on any level.

Breakfast is fantastic; the rooms are large and beautiful

the rooms in this hotel are at their basic three-star, but they've been done up so beautifully you almost don't notice there's no carpet, but instead some mats on a concrete floor. the bed is large and extremely comfortable. the restaurant on the 3rd floor provides a buffet of guangdong/thai/western food that is extremely delicious. dinner is also reasonably price and very tasty. location is good, although i find chinatown too bustling and hot. it is great to come to the hotel, which is peaceful and well conditioned, after a day of touring.

“Love it”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We stayed here recently for two nights. The hotel is on a busy road smack in the middle of Chinatown. Ride up from street level by elevator and relax in the quiet calm. You will be greeted with a cold cloth and lovely tea. Furnishings and decor are gorgeous. Service is unobtrusive, but there when needed. Rooms are dark and quiet in a romantic way.

We stayed with our two kids and mother-in-law. Not sure what we would have done without her as one kid stayed in her room. Our kids are in-between ages - too big for everyone in the bed, but too young to have their own room. Maybe they have a family-size room? I will definitely check next time I go to Bangkok as I would love to return here.

Gem of a hotel. Excellent service.
Colorful decor, sweet smelling, a bed the size of a small island.

After wandering around Chinatown for hours in the sweltering heat, when we finally located this hotel, we were quickly whisked upstairs to reception, a cool space scented with peppermint. After recovering on a lovely couch with a cup of tea and refreshing washcloth, we were efficiently checked in and shown to our room. Lovely, colorful, clean room with a great big bed the size of a small island. Awesome service from all staff. Various locations throughout hotel for sitting and relaxing. Good access (walking) to river. Not too far from subway and river taxi's. Very pleasant all around. Shanghai Mansion is a slice of tranquility amidst the chaos of Chinatown, Bangkok.

Heart of Chinatown!

Really enjoyed our stay here in the heart of Chinatown in a great hotel. Clean and very unique, you could easily be staying in China itself. Great places to eat just down the road, hawker stalls serving roasted duck and pork to die for!

Loved being in China Town and hotel is close to the train station where we came in. You're not far from the river and grand palace etc, but a bit of s trek uptown to the CBD. Great breakfast buffet!

A Chinese experience, from tea in the lobby...
Great location in heart of China Town

Escalator whisked us up to the second floor lobby and check in. We were welcomed and given tea and a cold wet handtowel to refreshing ourselves while our check in was confirmed. Rooms very quiet and decorated to the 9th degee in Chinese style. Breakfast buffet very good and much varied. Staff spoke excellent English.

Lovely Hotel with Great Style and Service
Unique, Stylish, Hospitable, Friendly, Accomodating

My boyfriend and I chose Shanghai Mansion for it's unique look and it's location. Not only is it in the middle of China Town, but it is also not far from the ferry and train station. This made it a great base camp to see the sights of Bangkok and other areas of Thailand. Bangkok is a crazy city, but once inside the Shanghai Mansion the surroundings are calming and zen. The fresh scent of the hotel contrasted greatly with the not so good smells on the street. Very refreshing! We were enjoyed our stay there very much. The service was great! As soon as we walked in the door, we were immediately greeted, relieved of our belongings, and given tea. The staff was polite, friendly, and very helpful. The breakfast included in our stay was good and there were many different options to choose from. We would highly recommend staying at the Shanghai Mansion. It's a cool place to check out and you will enjoy your stay!

This is truly a great place to stay! Most definitely my favourite hotel in Asia!

The first time I visited I was meeting my son and then going off on a motorcycle tour of Vietnam. I turned up tired, very wet and laden with a back pack! The staff were amazing! They virtually carried me in, sat me down with a welcome drink and hot and cold towels without even worrying if I had a reservation!

Nothing has changed since then. Top rate service with a smile, excellent food, rooms superb and amazing value for money.

The Shanghai Mansion is truly a pearl! It's location is perfect, right on the edge of Chinatown. The hotel shuttle can take you to most of the major sites if you plan it right. Down the steps and onto the street and you are straight away into the hustle and bustle of, for me, Bangkok's best area.

Highly recommended to all travellers.

Shanghai Mansionfulfils all your dreams, it is the perfect oasis in terms of the hotel but far more importantly with the staff led by Tew who confront every issue with true determination to solve all with a genuine character that leaves one with admiration. Truly this hotel deserves all it's acolades and with out question next time I need to be romantic in Bangkok this is the only place i will be booking into. The Cotton club is a soothing place and one never hears the hustle and bustle outside or even the rain. The Mu Dan Suite is a true inspiration. Book the Romantic package and the South African Red, wonderful in all aspects. Can't wait to rebook. Staff well trained, professional and with a sense of humor.

Die Lage im quirligen Chinatown ist schon etwas gew?hnungsbed?rftig, aber man kommt mit dem Tuk Tuk schnell ?berall hin.

Unique room decor and big bathtub

This hotel is located in the centre of Bangkok's Chinatown. Its main entrance blend into its surrounding - old prewar shop houses, noisy street, Bangkok's infamous traffic jam, etc... But once you step into the hotel's entrance you will be in another world, so to speak. The decor is chic and tranquil ambience. The room was clean, tastefully furnished and came with a big bathtub, bigger than those usually found in business-class hotel.

I really enjoy staying at this hotel. It has such a nice vibe, true character & is a visual delight. It's no wonder that people pay just to have their wedding photos done here.
It has an excellent Chinatown location so you can walk out the door at any time of day or night and have something to do. Markets are everywhere you turn, food stalls pop up from nowhere and when you're done eating, shopping & exploring the alleys, Shanghai Mansion envelopes you back into it's chic 1920s web.
The Peony Suite is a large room with polished concrete floors, super oversized bed, oriental day bed, large bath & shower. Ours opened onto the fish pool foyer that you can sit around when the mood takes you.
The breakfasts are an extensively stocked buffet with Asian & Western options. This space serves food throughout the day and turns into a jazz club in the evening. Great for a relaxing drink with some tunes.
The hotels service & atmosphere here more than makes up for the fact that it doesn't have a pool.
Make sure when staying here that you take the time to walk around all the levels to observe all it has to offer.

Great location and even though it's next to a busy street, the noise was not apparent.
All in all, an excellent choice, would highly recommend it.

Guest Review Stunning! Best kept secret in Bangkok
Location, classy, serene, elegant,

This is my 6th time at the Shanghai Mansion so I clearly love it! I know often get an upgrade to a suite which is absolutely beautiful. The staff know your name and acknowledge you with a smile. It is so beautiful and well priced. I find the bigger chain hotels quite cold and unwelcoming. Shanghai Mansion is a haven amongst the craziness of Chinatown. The food OMG is incredible. Chinatown is a foodies heaven. Don't be afraid to try everything on the street. There are quite often photo shoots at Shanghai Mansion it really is that stunning. The suites are worth the extra dollars. The bathtub is big enough to swim in. I also did a cooking lesson at The hotel and it was great. I was the only person so it was 1 on 1 and great fun, no I can take the food home with me!

Reviewed January 19, 2013

Once again, back in Bangkok. And once again, what makes the mad restlessness of this metropolis bearable is the tranquillity in peace that reigns once you've entered this hotel. Much could be written about the comfort of the rooms, the elegance of the furnishings, the fact that the minibar is complimentary, also the small details such as the shower gel, shampoos and lotions being supplied in refillable containers, but in effect, what is really striking is the fact, that even after a two-year hiatus, you find many of the same members of staff still working at Shanghai Mansions with the same kind of efficiency, but more importantly with the same unflagging friendliness. Looking back on our last couple of stays, we began and ended a trip to Laos in Bangkok, I felt that this was more of a home and less of the hotel. Being welcomed at the door and the reception, being greeted in the morning before sampling the delights of the breakfast buffet (which covers the spectrum from European my American to an Asian breakfast), for sitting in the bar for a drink in the evening and listening to the excellent offerings of local jazz musicians, it is always the staff that make this place what it is. I still feel uncomfortable in the vastness of Bangkok, I still feel incredibly well looked after and cared for by the people at Shanghai Mansions.

“Great boutique hotel”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

Enjoyable two-night stay in this hotel. The MRT station that was within walking distance made the
Chinatown location convenient. The entrance is quite inconspicuous though, overshadowed by the
neon-lit signages of the surrounding restaurants. One of the taxis that brought me back had to go a
second round on the one way road to stop at the right spot. If you are a Chinese cuisine foodie, you
are located in paradise here, with the long stretch of Chinatown's restaurants and street food sellers
all at your doorstep or within a few steps away. Very nice general manager who is very hands on and
always seems to be in and around the hotel. One morning, I saw her outside the hotel waiting - in a
daily practice - to give food to a monk; an act that brings good karma and fortune to the hotel, its staff,
guests, their families, etc.

Good food, excellent service, reasonably priced restaurant situated within The Shanghai Mansion Hotel.
The menu was mostly Thai food but there was plenty of choice for the majority of palates. A live jazz bad
played some nights and created a relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. There was no rush from the staff
for guests to finish their meal, so we were able to linger over our food and were able to soak up the
atmosphere and ambience of old Chinatown.

“Old fashioned style in modern Chinatown”

I LOVED the Shanghai Mansion Hotel! Everything about it appealed to me- the decor, the elegance,
the ambience and the location. I had a room on the fourth floor at the front of the hotel, where the hustle
and bustle of daily living in Chinatown could be seen and observed from sun up to sun down. My room
was clean and very comfortable, spacious, furnished in traditional style with silk cushions, lacquered
furniture and modern amenities. Our room had tea and coffee making facilities, a flat screen TV and
complimentary mini bar. FABULOUS! The shared areas of the hotel were luxurious and invited guests to
explore the Interior of the hotel further.

The staff were friendly and went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. The breakfasts
were BIG and of excellent quality as were the evening meals. We were right in the centre of Chinatown
where we could absorb the atmosphere and easily access the night markets, street cafes, river, local
attractions and the bars. I thought The Shanghai Mansion offered good value for money, and I wouldn't
hesitate to stay here again.
