We stayed at the Shanghai Inn bangkok hotel for one night in transit. I chose the hotel as I came across it on a website and it was one of the "Special Hotels of the World" and we were on our honeymoon and looking for something special, and something it was. It was very unique and different, just what we were hoping to find. We arrived at 7pm and departed at 6am the next morning so didn't have much time, but we managed a quick trip down the street amogst the saturday night markets and stalls. The food looked delicious!!

The staff were very frendly and helpful, they arranged a boxed breakfast as we had an early morning departure. The room as previoulsy mentioned was unqiueand very colourful. Considering the busy street we were facing we didn't here any traffic. The bathroom was cool, complete with it's own birdcage and lovely rainshower.

Loved the slippers (which unfortunely you cannot take!!) and the teapot. They provided a couple of bottles of drinking water, softdrinks and crisps free of charge in the mini bar, and have a full list of beverages which can be ordered by reception and delivered to your room (at resonable rates, for a hotel).

Our tour guide who picked us up the next day, said the area is a very nice area of Bangkok to stay. Would go back and hopefully stay longer to explore the area. They advertise they had a free tuk tuk service to the shopping areas, which would be useful.

The rooms were decorated terrifically!!

We had a lovely tk tuk driver from the hotel who gave us worth while advice regarding fares, tips, markets and travelling destinations.

Location as address states is in heart of Chinatown.

Deep in the heart of China Town, the Shanghai Inn bangkok hotel is a welcoming and enjoyable place to stay. The rooms are eclectic and fun. The staff was very attentive and helpful.

Best of all: The location. China Town is a great place to stay in Bangkok. I loved the streets, the markets, the food, the people. This is a place to be a tourist without being hassled or touted. Plus, it is close enough to walk to the train station and the river ferries.

The Shanghai Inn Bangkok hotel is a fabulously over the top hotel in terms of decor. Chinoisery gone overboard, cherry blossom lamps and bird cages in the bathroom. We stayed one night in transit elsewhere and would happily return. Rooms are clean, beds comfortable and the breakfast offered a good range of choices.

I'm in BKK every 12 weeks with my work and it's now my 2nd visit to this gem of a place, vey kitch and unique..I love the fact that it's not your normal corporate boring hotel and it's something completely different. Despite being in the bustle in Chinatown i've found it very quiet although though there is some refurb going on at the moment. Staff are lovely, rooms nice, breakfast OK and free internet. I would class this as a basic hotel that's clean and welcoming and fine if it's just a quick stay but not for a weeks holiday. If you go shopping in Chinatown, head to Sam Peng Soi early as after 10am it's mega busy. The only things I don't like about the S.H. are the concete floors and a price list inventory...who wants to steal the curtains or tissue box cover I ask!

We stayed here for one night on the way home. The hotel directions may it easy to find, especially as they had bell boys at the entrance with the names of the guests arriving that day! Our bags were put on a trolley and taken up to our room for us. Lovely boutique rooms, which really look like the photos!! Great waterfall shower! The price list of all the items in the rooms was slightly wierd - just in case you wanted to nick anything!! The complimentary water was great.

Good location-very close to Sampeng Lane-busy!!! Great seafood restaurants on the main road at night! The reception staff let us confirm our flights on their computer , as the internet computer was busy. We had a wake up call and checked out at 5am! I slept well but my boyfriend said that he was woken severl times by the reception staff noise during the night. Nice place-good location. We booked on hotel's website and got better deal than other sites!

We had a delightful stay at the Shanghai Inn in Bangkok, Thailand. The greeting the evening we arrived was very friendly and polite. The inn is beautifully decorated, very boutique and romantic.

The location was perfect for street action in the middle of China Town and touring to the temples, Grand Palace and street markets.

The staff was helpful and courteous at all times. Always going out of their way to see that we had accurate directions and information. I highly recommend their Thai massage at the spa in the hotel. The therapist was very thorough and I felt fabulous! Their breakfasts are well stocked and complete from fresh fruit to bacon and eggs!

After a day of touring we would spend some time in the lobby area relaxing sipping Thai beer and perusing their library.

Our original plans were to spend three nights but we spent two nights and left early the third day. Our flight from the US was delayed and we arrived one day late and the inn was so generous to delete the third night from our charge!

I can highly recommended the Shanghai Inn for a great stay in China Town, Bangkok, Thailand!

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who has issues with noise. We stayed in the suite which was spacious with very funky design, but it faces a big road so it was very loud. The room has an adjacent bathroom with a shower, it has a tv and a free (though almost empty) minibar. The staff was nice and kept our luggage for a few hours between check-out and leaving to the airport. They also organised a decent priced taxi to the airport. Underneath the hotel is a Spa, which we did not make any use of, but which had extremely reasonable prices. The hotel is located in Chinatown which is fun, but it is quite a walk to the train station (the nearest place to get onto public transport).

My partner and I stayed at the Shanghai Inn bangkok hotel for 2 nights during a stopover between Australia and Koh Lanta. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and more than happy to help with directions and arranging taxis etc.The hotel runs a complimentary tuk tuk service to the Grand Palace and the various shopping malls which was helpful and the hotel location is central and close to most tourist routes. The room was gorgeously decorated, very kitsch and boudoir-esque with TV, mini fridge and a great shower room. Quite spacious, clean and adequate for a short stopover. The breakfast could have been a lot better though and a more extensive room service list would've been helpful.

Exotic, Cosy, Convenient, Great Value for Money
Shanghai Inn
Australia                                                                                                                                                                          Apr 2, 2008

We loved this hotel. We couldnt believe how good value for money it was - it s a perfect sanctuary in the heart of a hectic, noisy city. Our room was much more spacious than we expected and the interior decoration is gorgeaus. The shower is excellent and large enough for 2 (or more!!!). Its located in Chinatown, which is very close to the rest of the city (taxis are cheap) but offers a more interesting experience than staying in the touristy areas such as Khao San. Turn right out of the hotel and you have all the street food and pavement restaurants - the one on the corner nearest the hotel is delicious, cheap and authentic. There is also the famous night market just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

The hotel is also conveniently located above a mini-supermarket and sushi/noodle/fruit bar. Hualamphong (Bangkoks mainline train station and metro) is just a 5 or 10 min walk away. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Once inside our room we could not hear all the hustle and bustle of chaotic chinatown. I really enjoyed my stay here and would definatley recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of luxury but is on a budget and appreciates value for money. My ONLY word of warning - and this applies to anywhere in Bangkok, not just the Shanghai Inn, - do not let anyone (particularly hotel staff) try to reccommend a restaurant to you. They may even offer free transport. It may seem like a good offer. IT ISN T! It is a ploy to get you to eat at a mediocre restaurant and pay exorbitant prices. They get paid commission to do this. Be firm and say no. Do not let anyone try to persuade you into eating somewhere or visiting somewhere because it is nearly always a tourist trap and you will end up feeling like a right plonker for falling for it! Also, if you eat seafood at a restaurant it s sometimes priced per KG. Always double check the exact cost BEFORE you order.

The Shanghai Inn bangkok hotel was probably, the best hotel I stayed at the whole 2 weeks in Thailand. It was also very decently priced... I payed $70 a night which included a nicely appointed breakfast buffet. The room decor was perfect and what you would expect from a Shanghai experience, plus the shower was awesome... big head, good coverage and pressure! The hot water was almost too hot...but fully appreciated.

Yes, this hotel is in Chinatown and yes, Chinatown is a very busy place (like ALL of Bangkok) with for the most part, few tourist. You can get pretty much anywhere you want via their free shuttle service (which I didn't use or for 50 - 80 baht via tuk tuk or metered taxi. There are plenty of touristy things to check out just a few steps from the hotel. Chinatown itself is a must see and the happy and golden budda's are just a quick walk down the street.

Seriously..."awful location" is a bit much I would say...unless you are either not willing to be open minded to different cultures (and the spectacles they offer) or are just used to hotels like the intercontinental or four seasons (maybe on business in Bangkok) near siam square and all the huge (air conditioned) shopping malls.... which you can be to by tuk tuk or taxi in less then 5 minutes (60 baht).

The one thing that I would say was annoying about my experience at the Shanghai Inn was, I had arranged a metered taxi for pick up at 3am to the BKK airport. I got to the front desk at 3am and was told "metered taxi too difficult... you pay 400 baht." . I was a bit annoyed with this, since they said a metered taxi wouldn't be a problem. I had already been to BKK once before when I flew to Phuket, so I new exactly how much it would cost via meter (220 baht + tolls= about 280 baht max), so I said "meter taxi or 280 baht, no more!" and after some chatter back and forth in Thai and a walk down to the front entrance, they final got me a "pink" taxi which are the easiest to get a metered rate and I was off to the airport.
For this I will not rate the hotel as Excellent... but it was pretty darn close!

Anyone travelling to Bangkok wanting a real Chinatown experience - look no further than the Shanghai Inn bangkok hotel - a small, very quiet hotel - each room totally unique, individially decorated with Chinese antiques and lots of jewel-like colour. A real gem - wonderful staff who do their best - the manager speaks perfect English so ask for him (Tu). Everyone so helpful - we found it the best experience of our entire 3 week holiday in Thailand. Right in the middle of fascinating Chinatown with its alleyways and markets, walk to the river to catch the local boat taxis - bang slap in the hubbub of everything yet very peaceful.

A very special place, unique and beautiful, away from all the tourists. Basic but good breakfasts - very clean, we'll definitely be going back there and wouldn't dream of looking anywhere else.
Sorry my photos aren't ready yet!

Check out their website. its all exactly as shown!

This hotel is a great homebase while visiting Bangkok. Decor is truly chinoise chic; staff is helpful and speak good English; breakfast has just enough options for anyone; location is in the heart of Chinatown. Only a 15 minute walk to the river boat stop and a 10 minute walk to the subway. Chinatown is always busy and crowded, but a fun place to wander. Price can't be beat. Each room has a fridge, safe, TV, four poster bed and amazing shower - we loved the decor.
